Jusuf Nurkic - Cedevita Zagreb - EC13 (photo CAI Zaragoza)Cedevita Zagreb started its Eurocup Last 32 Group P campaign by getting a 67-75 road victory over CAI Zaragoza. Allan Ray led the way for Cedevita with 17 points while Jusuf Nurkic and Goran Suton both had 14 and Luka Babic added 13. Joseph Jones poured in 20 points in the loss for Zaragoza while Damjan Rudez added 17. The hosts outrebounded Cedevita 37-31 – including a whopping 14 offensive rebounds. Cedevita converted half of its 20 three-pointers, led by Ray, who made 3 of 4 from downtown.

Rudez’s three gave Zaragoza a 5-4 lead. Ray had a three-ball and a layup to put Zagreb ahead 5-9. The hosts went on a 6-0 run to take the lead back 13-11. But Suton scored the final five points of the quarter as Cedevita was leading 15-21 after 10 minutes. Babic knocked down two three-pointers in pushing the cushion to double digits at 17-27. Viktor Sanikidze and Rudez answered later in the quarter to get Zaragoza back to within 30-32. Suton responded with a three-point play and Marino Bazdaric nailed a long ball as the lead grew to 33-44 at the break. Another Ray long ball pushed the margin to 37-49 early in the third quarter. Jonathan Tabu and Jones combined to get Zaragoza to within 46-49. Tomislav Zubcic’s trey made it a six-point game and the Zagreb lead was 48-54 after three quarters. Zaragoza could not cut into the Cedevita gap and guests used a three-point play by Nurkic and a trey by Babic for a 53-66 margin. The cushion was still 57-69 with three minutes left after a Zubcic long ball. Zaragoza put into one last fight with Rudez hitting a trey and Jones converting a three-point play to trim it to 63-69 with 1:35 minutes left. But Suton put back an offensive rebound and Zagreb made four of four free throws in the final 52 seconds to secure the win.

Head Coaches

ABOS, JOSE LUIS
CAI Zaragoza
"Congratulations to Cedevita. They played a great game, especially in defense. They defended with aggressiveness while we were a bit lost on court. They played fastbreaks and we didn't stop them. We didn't havethe intensity to play a home game of the Eurocup. In the second half we did a bit better, got close. But in those moments we also missed the shots, especially from the arc, and then it is very complicated. They shot at 50% from downtown and that is bad for us. We are missing a lot from long range and we need the accuracy to win this kind of games. We did a good effort in defense, but we didn't manage to score well."
REPESA, JASMIN
Cedevita Zagreb
"I think we played like men against an excellent team, and we deserved to win. But this is only one victory. We gained an advantage, but there is five games left to play in our Group, and we need to keep winning if we want to go through. I agree that the first half was one of the best we have played this season. After the break, we were little out of energy, we did not run the floor like in the first half, but we got the rebounds when we needed them. Also, we were smart on offense, and all together it was really satisfying."

Players

JONES, JOSEPH
CAI Zaragoza
"It's tough. They played a great game, came out and did their job. They made their shots. We came out more aggressive in the second half but didn't make our shots."
BABIC, LUKA
Cedevita Zagreb
"This is one big win for us. I think not too many people expected it from us, but we believed in ourselves. We were without our two best point guards, Nolan Smith and Ante Delas, but we did a really good job tonight."
