Gran Canaria edges Valencia on the road
Gran Canaria registered its second road victory in Group B by downing Valencia Basket 89-90 at La Fonteta on Wednesday. Gran Canaria improved to 2-1 in the standings while Valencia dropped to 1-2. Nicolas Brussino led the winners with 17 points, Dylan Ennis added 16, A.J. Slaughter had 13 and John Shurna 12 for Gran Canaria. Jasiel Rivero paced Valencia with 16 points, Martin Hermannsson added 15, Sam Van Rossom 14, Xabi Lopez-Arostegui 12 and Klemen Prepelic 11. Brussino had 10 quick points, allowing Gran Canaria to get an early double-digit lead, 13-23. Lopez-Arostegui and Van Rossom brought Valencia within 23-25 after 10 minutes. Shurna had 8 points in an 0-11 run that gave Gran Canaria a 41-51 advantage at halftime. Artem Pustovyi and Dylan Ennis helped Gran Canaria to a 16-point margin late in the third quarter. Hermannsson, Rivero and Lopez-Arostegui brought Valencia within 76-79 with 4 minutes left. Slaughter and Ennis stepped up in crunch time, allowing Gran Canaria to seal a prestigious road win.
Hermannsson got Valencia going with a reverse layup and Jaime Pradilla added a couple of baskets for a 7-4 lead. Brussino followed a driving basket with a triple, but Prepelic answered from downtown and Pradilla scored again. Ennis and a red-hot Brussino kept the visitors ahead, 12-15. Chris Kramer hit a floater and then Brussino and Slaughter each hit a three-pointer to make it a double-digit game, 13-23. Lopez-Arostegui and Van Rossom each struck from beyond the arc and got help from Rivero to bring Valencia within 23-25 after 10 minutes.
Josep Puerto joined the three-point shootout early in the second quarter and Rivero scored down low for a 28-25 Valencia lead. Oliver Stevic and Kramer rescued Gran Canaria with back-to-back layups and Khalifa Diop dunked in a 0-10 run that Brussino capped with a jumper. Khalifa Diop added a jump hook, but Hermannsson followed a jumper with a bomb from beyond the arc in an 8-0 run that tied it at 37-37. Shurna stepped up with a corner triple and a layup and followed Slaughter's three-pointer with a basket-plus-foul for a 37-48 Gran Canaria lead after a 0-11 run. Brussino beat the halftime buzzer with a three-pointer that kept Gran Canaria comfortably ahead, 41-51, at the break.
Pustovyi took over with a tip-in right after the break, but Dubljevic and Van Rossom brought Valencia a bit closer, 46-56. Pustovyi silenced the crowd with a wild dunk-and-foul and Ennis matched Dubljevic's jump hook with a jumper for a 48-58 Gran Canaria lead. Miquel Salvo dunked and Ennis buried a three-pointer that broke the game open, 50-64. Van Rossom and a red-hot Ennis traded three-pointers and Andrew Albicy soon made it a 16-point difference. Prepelic scored down low and followed Pradilla's dunk with a bomb from downtown. Hermannsson and Slaughter exchanged triples to fix the score at 65-75 after 30 minutes.
Hermannsson buried a jumper early in the fourth quarter and Lopez-Arostegui added a fastbreak layup that caused Gran Canaria to call timeout at 69-75. Rivero ignited the crowd with consecutive dunks but Slaughter answered with a driving layup and Ennis beat the shot clock buzzer with a jumper. After Lopez-Arostegui hit a three-pointer, Slaughter buried a jumper and Ennis scored again to give Gran Canaria plenty of fresh air at 76-83. Van Rossom then struck from beyond the arc, but Albicy and Rivero exchanged layups and Stevic banked in a jump hook to make it 81-87 in the next-to-last minute. Albicy buried a critical triple only to see Van Rossom and Prepelic do the same, making it 89-90 with 1.8 seconds left. Gran Canaria ran the clock out after a timeout.
Albicy shares and steps up
Gran Canaria registered an 89-90 road victory against Valencia Basket and playmaker Andrew Albicy was right in the middle of it, stepping up when his team needed him and sharing the ball all game long. Albicy finished the game with 10 assists - just 2 away from his EuroCup personal best, and only committed 2 turnovers. He also made the difference in the final minutes, scoring 5 of his 9 points down the stretch. He scored in penetration with over 2 minutes left and buried a three-pointer that allowed Gran Canaria to seal the win, 83-90, with 48.6 seconds remaining.
Oddly enough, a first showdown
Valencia Basket ranks second in games played in EuroCup history with 209 and Gran Canaria is third with 189. They only trail UNICS Kazan (231). Despite combining for 398 EuroCup showdowns and facing each other dozens of times in Spanish League action, this was the first matchup between the teams in the EuroCup. Gran Canaria became the third Spanish team to win a EuroCup game in La Fonteta. Bilbao Basket was the first one to do it, 60-61, on January 29, 2013. Unicaja Malaga also beat Valencia at La Fonteta, 58-63, in Game 3 of the EuroCup Finals on April 5, 2017, to lift the trophy.
Telling numbers: Effectiveness gives Gran Canaria the win
Gran Canaria managed to beat Valencia Basket 89-90 on the road in Round 3 of the 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season. It managed to do it by shooting the ball well and taking better care of the ball. Gran Canaria made 25 of 38 two-pointers (65.8%) and 10 of 24 from beyond the arc (41.7%). Valencia also shot the ball well (66.7% 2FG, 41.4% 3FG) but Gran Canaria matched the hosts' efforts. The guests finished the game with 17 assists, 13 turnovers and 9 steals, doing better than Valencia in general terms. The hosts had 19 assists, but 16 turnovers and just 5 steals.
