Limoges tops PAOK, reaches the eighthfinals

Limoges CSP advanced to the Eurocup eighthfinals by downing PAOK Thessaloniki 79-61 at home in Group I on Wednesday. Limoges finished Group I with a 3-3 record and advance to its tie-break advantage against Valencia Basket (2-0). As such, Limoges is set to face Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas in the Eurocup eighthfinals. PAOK was fourth in this group with a 2-4 record. Bo McCalebb led the winners with 17 points. Will Daniels added 14 while Leo Westermann had 10 for Limoges. Georgios Dedas had 19 points for PAOK while Will Hatcher added 14. Limoges used outstanding defense to get a 16-9 lead after 10 minutes. An outstanding McCalebb shined late in the first half to boost the hosts' margin to 39-25 at halftime. Apollon Tsochlas and Dedas tried to change things for PAOK after the break but a jumper by McCalebb kept Limoges way ahead, 60-44, after 30 minutes. The hosts boosted their margin to 69-49 and cruised to a historical home win.

Nikola Markovic got PAOK going with a free throw but Matt Gatens struck from downtown and Nobel Boungou-Colo added a fast break dunk for a 5-1 Limoges lead. Markovic stepped with a close basket and foul shots by Vangelis Margaritis tied it at 5-5. Ali Traore banked in a jump hook and another three-pointer by Gatens boosted Limoges's margin to 10-5. A running jumper by McCalebb made PAOK call timeout at 12-5. Margaritis banked in a tough shot and Hatcher erased McCalebb's basket with free throws for a 14-9 PAOK deficit. Daniels shined with a backdoor layup to give Limoges a 16-9 lead after 10 minutes. Gatens scored around the basket early in the second quarter but a jumper by Kostas Kakaroudis kept PAOK within 18-11. Westermann took over with a corner triple and Ousmane Camara shined with a three-point play but Hatcher hit a bomb from downtown. Daniels kept pacing Limoges but Milenko Tepic banked in a floating shot and Markovic split free throws for a 26-17 PAOK deficit. Westermann fired in another triple but Tsochlas also struck from beyond the arc. McCalebb split free throws and a triple by Dedas gave PAOK hope at 30-24. Mark Payne hit an off-balance shot and McCalebb hit free throws, downed a corner triple and beat the halftime buzzer with a circus shot that gave Limoges a 14-point lead, 39-25, at the break.

Markovic hit free throws soon after the break, as PAOK made Limoges go scoreless for more than 2 minutes. Hatcher beat the shot clock with a driving basket that Traore erased with a backdoor layup. Yakhouba Diawara followed a layup with a catch-and-shoot triple that made PAOK stop the game at 46-29. Tsochlas answered from downtown off a timeout but he didn't find much help around. Meanwhile, Westermann nailed a turnaround jumper for a 48-32 score. Tsochlas buried another triple and Hatcher also nailed one from beyond the arc to make Limoges call timeout at 48-38. Boungou-Colo rescued Limoges with a triple but Dedas joined the three-point shootout, too. Hatcher split free throws, Traore hit his trademark jump hook and a three-point play by McCalebb kept Limoges way ahead, 56-42, after 30 minutes. Boungou-Colo and Dedas exchanged baskets early in the fourth quarter and a jumper by McCalebb gave Limoges a 60-44 lead. Dedas nailed a corner triple but a put-back slam by Gatens ignited the crowd at 62-47. Tepic shined with a fast break basket that Westermann matched with a six-meter jumper. Mathieu Wojciechowski scored around the basket and a three-point play by Gatens sealed the outcome, 69-49, with 5 minutes left. Nothing changed from that moment, as a sellout crowd at Beaublanc had plenty of time to celebrate a well-deserved, go-ahead win.

"When you look at where we were some time ago, it is a beautiful performance. PAOK is a team that knows how to play these games. The pressure was on us. They used a zone defene, hoping to make the most out of our fear. They beat Valencia a bit like that last week and had narrow losses against Olympiacos and Panathinaikos. This is the result of a collective effort, especially on defense. We reached our first goal and this is a first sucess for the team. We will play against Gran Canaria and try to win both games."
MARKOPOULOS, SOULIS
PAOK Thessaloniki
"We had a big problem: our two-point shooting percentage was 24%. Our team needs all of its players and tonight, we were without Vasileiadis and Schortsanitis, two very important players for us. Limoges is also no longer the same team that it was when we played against them at home. We played a tough game against Olympiacos in the Greek League 48 hours ago, which also counted."

WESTERMANN, LEO

"Three weeks ago, we were buried alive after losing our first two games in this group. We qualified by winning three games. PAOK lacked two major players but we were close to beat Olympiacos without them. It is a shooters' team and had no pressure, so it was difficult to play against them. We felt like we were the better team. Our next opponent, Gran Canaria, is a good team with very good defense, with great shooters and without a big star. It will be tough but we won in Zagreb, Milan and Valencia. We have this ability to win on the road if we need it."
