Walker's buzzer-beater takes Dijon past Olimpija

JDA Dijon left the 2014-15 Eurocup with a prestigious road win by downing Union Olimpija Ljubljana 73-76 in Group K in the Slovenian capital on Wednesday. Both teams had already run out of chances to make it to the eighthfinals - Dijon was third with a 2-4 record and Olimpija fourth at 1-5. Kris Joseph led the winners with 15 points. Ferdinand Prenom added 12, Erving Walker had 11, including the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, while Jacques Alingue got 10 for Dijon. Alen Omic led Olimpija with 25 points on 10-of-12 two-point shots and 9 rebounds. Luka Rupnik, Gregor Horvat and Dino Muric each had 12 for the hosts. Rupnik added 10 assists for a double-double. Dijon led 12-17 after 10 minutes, boosted its margin to 28-40 at halftime and then again to 35-55 late in the third quarter. Omic and Muric led the hosts' comeback and Horvat tied it at 73-73 already in the final seconds but Walker beat the buzzer with a three-pointer which allowed Dijon to leave the competition in style.

Back-to-back baskets by Omic gave Olimpija a 4-2 lead. Muric hit free throws and Omic scored again for an 8-4 Olimpija edge. Alingue and Joseph combined for all points in a 0-7 run which gave Dijon its first lead, 8-11. Klemen Prepelic struck from downtown but Alingue, Kevin Joss-Rauze and Zach Moss allowed the guests to get a five-point lead, 12-17, after 10 minutes. Vasilije Vucetic and Paolo Marinelli brought Olimpija a bit closer, 16-20, early in the second quarter. Prenom and Horvat traded baskets but a jumper by Andre Harris and free throws by Steven Gray made it an eight-point game, 18-26. Rupnik and Omic tried to change things for Olimpija but a layup by Joseph and a dunk by Moss made it a double-digit game, 25-35. Joseph struck from beyond the arc and a jumper by Aldo Curti gave Dijon a 12-point lead, 28-40, at halftime. Joseph kept pacing Dijon after the break and a layup by Walker boosted the guests' lead to 32-47. Alingue dunked and a dunk by Steven Gray seemed to break the game open, 32-51. Another dunk by Gray gave Dijon its biggest margin, 35-55. Omic and Muric stepped up for Olimpija, however, and free throws by Rupnik brought the hosts within single digits, 49-58, after 30 minutes. Moss scored early in the fourth quarter but Olimpija improved its defense, as Muric led an 8-0 run that brought the hosts back in the game, 57-60. Prenom and Moss stepped up for Dijon and back-to-back baskets by Walker made it a six-point game, 63-69. Three-pointers by Marinelli and Rupnik made it a one-point game, 71-72. Prenom split free throws and Horvat tied it at 73-73 but Walker won it for Dijon with the go-ahead triple at the buzzer.

"We saw two different halves. We did not play like ourselves in first half, while in second half we showed more energy and desire to win. My players did not believe from the start of the game that we can win without players who are injured. Because we had four players injured, the other four started to feel sorry for themselves. You can not play basketball this way. In the second half, we saw a completely different game and my team played with more aggressivness. We played better in defense and smarter in offense, even though we still made a lot of mistakes. We had rookie mistakes that cost us victory today. We have a young team, which makes a lot of mistakes. I hope these young players are gaining experience, so they will some time in the future play more mature and smarter."

"We are happy to win this game even though it did not mean anything result wise. It is not nice to finish the competition with a defeat on the road. Both teams had a lot of injured players, so it was a very difficult game. We played a good first half, then we made some mistakes both in defense and offense. Union Olimpija started to play aggressive in second half and they returned to the game. We won the game on the last possesion."
