Catalana Occident Manresa used a big second half to pull away and beat DKV Joventut 62-80 to clinch second place in Group B and a semifinals berth at the Ciutat de L’Hospitalet Tournament on Wednesday. Manresa will return to the court in Thursday’s first game to play Regal FC Barcelona for a ticket to the final. Joventut led early before Marcus Eriksson pushed Manresa to a 3-17 charge and a 36-43 advantage at the break. Manresa never let up after that en route to an important win. Johan Bitjaa did not miss a shot as he amassed 16 points for the winners, Sergi Sole added 15, Eriksson 13 and Ferran Huerta scored 11. Guillem Vives and Gerard Sevillano scored 14 apiece for Joventut in defeat. Vives and Sevillano triggered a 6-0 start for Joventut, but Manresa closed the gap and then took the lead on triples by Albert Cantero and Oscar Perez. The lead changed hands several times before Augusti Sans put Joventut ahead by two baskets. A basket-plus-foul by Sole closed the gap to 20-19 after 10 minutes. Another strong start to the quarter pushed Joventut ahead by 7 only for a pair of Eriksson threes to bring Manresa back and an Adria Sala three-pointer made it 28-32. Eriksson tacked on 2 more free throws to cap a 3-17 charge that lifted Manresa’s lead to 29-36. The lead continued to grow on another Eriksson triple and a Miquel Guila layup that put Manresa up 9. Francesc Pascual scored to make it 36-43 at the break. Huerta put Manresa ahead by double figures early in the second half. Sevillano took charge for Joventut and made it 41-49, but found little help. Manresa pushed the lead to 13 before Sevillano drilled a three. Vives started to take responsibility too, but it wasn’t enough and Manresa took a 49-59 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Vives brought Joventut within 8 again, but Bitjaa came right back with 5 points and then Huertas drilled a pair of threes in a 0-11 run that sealed the outcome for Manresa.
