Unics Kazan had its second win of the season, first at home, on Wednesdeay afternoon by beating Telenet Oostende of Belgium by 83-72. The win allows Unics to climb to a 2-0 record in Group F and has sole possession of first place precisely handing Oostende its first loss and a 1-1. Unics took control of thesituation and, little by little, kept increasing the margin until a 10-0 run late in the third quarter broke the game open for good. Ian vougioukas led the winners with his 20 points, Vladimir Veremeenko added 14 and Chuck Eidson and Terrell Lyday had 11 apiece. For Oostende, Brent Wright led the way with 15 points, Dusan Katnic and Dusan Djordjevic nailed 11 apiece and Mario Stojic contributed 10.
Chuck Eidson had a good start to the game as his early five first points allowed Unics to have a 7-6 edge soon. The other
side of the coin was Brent Wright for Telenet Oostende as he soon was up to 7 points to make it an 11-11 tie. However, Unics
was back on its feet fast with a 12-2 run including points by Eidson, Ian Vougioukas plus Terrell Lyday to make it 23-13,
suddenly a double-digit game for the hosts. Mario Stojic tried to send a wake up call to the guests, but Vougioukas, total
dominator in the second half of the period, scored 4 more points to close the quarter at 27-15 for Unics. Oostende regrouped
a little with the start of the second quarter as Dusan Katnic and Wes Wilkinson hit back-to-back threes for the guests for
the 29-21. Vougioukas was soon back in business with a three-point play while Wright tried to keep Oostende in the game.
However, Unics managed to get back on its feet and recovered the gap as Vougioukas soon escalated to 16 points at the break
for a 48-34 Unics edge at halftime despite a 1 of 6 from the arc while Oostende had 4 of 11.
The guests started the second half on the right foot with 8 fast points including 7 straight by Dusan Djordjevic, but Unics was not relaxing too much. With 54-45 on the scoreboard, Kostas Kaimakoglou slammed the ball to calm things down. Unics was still having problems from the three-point line but Oostende's percentage from the field was allowing the hosts to maintain the double-digit lead with almost no problems. Kaimakoglou hit his 10th point to make it 62-52 in minute 27. The Unics scoring run went up to 7-0 as Vladimir Veremeenko slammed it for 67-52. Kaimakoglou closed the period with a new three for the 10-0 and a 70-52 after 30 minutes. In the last period, Oostende never lowered its arms but Unics cruised to maintain the margin. The hosts even made it a 20-point game when Mire Chatman scored the first basket of the last quarter, 72-52, but Dragisa Drobnjak appeared for the guests with six points of his own for 78-60. But with less than 4 minutes to go, it was clear that Unics was out of reach for Oostende, and the hosts claimed the second win of the season to stay undefeated this season, despite late attempts by Oostende to, at least, trim the point margin at the final buzzer with a 0-10 final burst.
