CSKA downs Real in Madrid

In a battle between the two winningest teams in continental basketball history, CSKA Moscow returned to its winning ways by downing Real Madrid 89-96 in the Spanish capital on Thursday. CSKA avoided a third consecutive loss and improved to 19-10 in the standings. Meanwhile, Real dropped to 17-13 and is 2-5 in its last seven games. Will Clyburn led the winners with 23 points, Mike James added 22, Johannes Voigtmann scored 18 and Toko Shengelia 14 for CSKA. Trey Thompkins paced Real with 20 points, Jaycee Carroll added 17, Fabien Causeur 14 and Gabriel Deck and Edy Tavares each scored 12 for the hosts. Tavares added 13 rebounds for a double-double. CSKA led 21-23 after 10 minutes, extended its margin to 41-55 at halftime and to 43-63 soon after the break. Real managed to get within 85-90, but Daniel Hackett and Voigtmann took care of business in crunch time.

Shengelia and James hit a three-pointer apiece in a 0-8 opening run. Tavares stepped up with a tip-in, then Thompkins and Causeur each struck from downtown, but James and Shengelia kept CSKA ahead, 8-13. Causeur and Tavares scored around the basket and Deck added a triple, but Shengelia and James each downed one from beyond the arc for a 15-19 CSKA lead. Tavares dunked twice, however, Iffe Lundberg and Janis Strelnieks kept the guests ahead, 21-23, after 10 minutes. Strelnieks banked in a floater early in the second quarter and Joel Bolomboy added a jumper, but Thompkins kept Real within 26-27. Bolomboy kept pacing CSKA and Clyburn followed a triple with a layup-plus-foul for a 30-35 lead. James buried a step-back triple, but Deck and Usman Garuba kept Real close at 33-38. Clyburn struck twice from downtown and James added his fourth three-pointer to make it a double-digit game, 35-47. Voigtmann dunked and got help from Clyburn and James to boost CSKA's lead to 41-55 at halftime.

Shengelia and Voigtmann each buried a three-pointer soon after the break and Nikita Kurbanov added a layup for a 43-63 CSKA lead. Thompkins stepped up with back-to-back triples, but James and Voigtmann kept CSKA comfortably ahead, 49-67. Tavares, Deck and Carlos Alocen tried to change things for Real, bringing their team within 55-69. Carroll followed a wild four-point play with a bomb from downtown, then Causeur followed a triple with a floater to give Los Blancos hope, 67-74, after 30 minutes. Carroll and Clyburn traded baskets early in the fourth quarter, but Voigtmann followed a dunk with a three-pointer for a 70-81 CSKA lead. Thompkins scored in the paint and Alberto Abalde added a three-pointer to bring Real close, 75-83. Voigtmann stayed on fire, Daniel Hackett found his first points and James gave CSKA a 77-90 lead with under 4 minutes left. Deck and Carroll fueled an 8-0 run that gave the hosts hope, 85-90, with less than 3 minutes left. Hackett hit free throws and Voigtmann sealed the outcome, 87-96, with a corner triple.

Pivotal performer

In just his third start of the season, Johannes Voigtmann became CSKA's X-factor in this game. He hit 4 of 7 triples on his way to 18 points plus 9 rebounds, an assist and a block for a PIR of 24.

Game-changing moment

It was a close game until Will Clyburn decided he had enough. Clyburn was scoreless when a driving layup by Nico Laprovittola brought Madrid within 28-29 in the second quarter. Clyburn had 16 points before halftime, hitting three times from downtown and getting plenty of help from Mike James to boost CSKA's lead to 41-55 at the break.

Stellar stat

CSKA made 16 of 34 three-point shots (47.1%). Those 16 three-point shots made are close to CSKA's club record, 18, against Anadolu Efes Istanbul (twice) in 2008 and 2018. CSKA committed just 6 turnovers, tying a season-low: it also had 6 against TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz in Round 18.

Did you know?

It was CSKA's sixth win in its last seven games against Real. The previous five in that streak were by 5 points or less. CSKA now has a 21-8 record against Los Blancos since the turn of the millennium.

Next game

Both teams return to EuroLeague action next week on Thursday, March 25. CSKA hosts Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade. And Real visits LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne.

Head Coaches

Real Madrid
"First of all, congratulations to CSKA for the win. I think that our first half was really soft, lacking energy on offense and defense. They hit shots and took a big, excessive lead. We were able to fight in the second half, switching defenses and finding different situations, but with the feeling that we were a little bit 'behind'. Of course, I cannot hide the fact that the team kept fighting. We got close on a couple of occasions, but the feeling we had was we had lost control of the game in the first half, which is where they were better than us. That's it, congratulations to CSKA, again. As for us, we have to move on quickly because we have another game on Sunday. Jaycee has been playing really well offensively in the last games and he gives us a threat in the game which, when he is hitting shots, generates a lot of good things. Honestly, that factor is important when you are able to tie the game. If what you have is to go look for him, then it looks like only Jaycee can win the game, and I don't think it is like that. Obviously, we ran out of time, because probably, we lost the game in the first half."
CSKA Moscow
"First of all, I want to congratulate my team. I think that, from the beginning, we had a crystal clear idea of how we have to defend, but also how we have to play in our offense: try to get everything that we can, what was given, especially from the perimeter, but defensively, I think we were giving our fights. We had some problems that we had to solve on pick-and-roll defense because Tavares became a secondary creator and their primary creator with the short roll and the deep roll, and he was sharing the ball as a secondary creator very well. But I think we were very composed and scored a lot of points in the first half, 55. We had the same idea in the second half and we talked at halftime that now is the time for Carroll, because we had been scouting that Carroll gets in in the second half, especially when they have a problem. Carroll has been giving a lot, but today, he really had an amazing performance, 17 points. He tried to break our celebration, but I think we were composed in the end, playing small ball, playing some matchups and hitting big shots. I think we also had our moments in our offense, trying to take Tavares out of the paint as much as possible. We started that with Toko [Shengelia] and he hit crucial shots, and then Jo-Jo [Voigtmann] and other players from the perimeter. Overall, it was a good road win for us. We were struggling lately and that's a good, I hope, turning point for us. Congratulations to my team, congratulations to the players, and good luck to Madrid."

Real Madrid
"First of all, CSKA is a very good team. They came out and started hitting some difficult shots in the first half. Some of them were not that difficult, but some others were very tough. We wanted to be there but didn't have the power. In the second half, we had to fight back to try to get into the game, to try to win. We were down by 20 points, we rallied to within 5 points and that was it, we couldn't overcome that deficit. We have get two, three or four more wins, I don't know how many, but we have to think of every game as if it was a final, and we can do it. We have a team with some young players who are a little inexperienced, but they are gaining that experience every day. Each EuroLeague game is like a final for us."
CSKA Moscow
"We just had a pretty comfortable lead and let it slip away a little bit. We just know what we were going to do and followed the plan. We knew we didn't make shots at the end of the third, so we had to come out and make some shots. And we did. We were able to get some vital stops and overall, we had some great hustle plays on defense. That is what you need. When Carroll gets like this, you need to get some good steals, some good defenses, and you can win out."
CSKA Moscow
"I feel good about it. I am just happy to be back with the team. Obviously, being injured is never easy but I am just happy to be back with the team. I hope we can play like that all the time."
