Songaila game-winner gave Lietuvos Rytas a thrilling win in Zagreb

Darius Songaila scored a mid-range jumper with 23 seconds left to give an 83-84 road win to Lietuvos Rytas over Cedevita Zagreb in Group P. Both teams have now 1-1 records and share second place in the group. Renaldas Seibutis led the winners with 17 points, Martynas Gecevicius and Songaila added 16 each, Juan Palacions 11 and Zab Dowdell 10, while Omar Cook distributed 10 assists. Cedevita got 19 points form Miro Bilan, 16 from Nolan Smith and 11 apiece from Tomislav Zubcic and Goran Suton.

In a run-and-gun start, the teams exchanged leads before Palacios’s layup tied the score at 11-11. Cedevita took the lead with a three posted by Suton. The hosts, fueled by Smith and Luka Babic, increased the margin to 19-13. Cook from long distance and Seibutis from the foul line made it 21-20, before a dunk from Zubcic and an easy lay from Songaila fixed a 26-22 margin for Zagreb at the end of the quarter. Young talented big man Jusuf Nuric raised the margin to double figures, 32--22, but it was Zubcic from downtown that pushed his side in front 36-22. Rytas started playing more consistently and was back closer with a Gecevicius three, 43-35. Nurkic again scored in the paint, but the guests scored 7 points in 11 seconds to make it a 1-point-game. Zubcic with seconds left fixed the score at 50-46 for Cedevita at halftime with a deep three. Bilan increased the margin to 54-46 at the start of the third quarter. Songaila and Gecevicius fueled Rytas, while a three hit by Dowdell brought the guests closer, 63-61. Allan Ray and Nurkic scored short jumpers to make it 67-61. A triple by Zubcic at the buzzer made it 70-63 at the end of the third quarter. The visitors opened the final quarter with a 10-0 run capped by Cook from beyond the arc, 70-73. Four consecutive free throw by Smith put ahead Cedevita 80-77. Then came a thrilling finale: Seibutis tied the score from downtown with 59 seconds left. Songaila scored the game-winner before Ray missed one of his 2 free throws and Smith a jumper after pulling down the offensive rebound.

Cedevita Zagreb
"We didn't play with enough energy. When we score 83 points we should win by 15 points. My team led by 14 points, but we blew the lead. We made some stupid mistakes and in some situations my players were not patient enough. I am not angry at Nolan Smith regarding his last play, but I think he waited too long to start the play. Selby was trying really hard today, but he didn't have enough time to adjust to our team."
PETROVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius
"This is a very important win for us. We won this game with defense. Cedevita had a chance to secure the win, but they made some mistakes when they had a big lead. After changing our defense on Cedevita's centers, Jusuf Nurkic and Miro Bilan, we changed the momentum of the game and that was crucial for our win. The game was decided by just one ball and I am happy we managed to get a win. We couldn't do anything on offense against Cedevita's centers, but Gecevicius, Seibutis, Dowdell and Cook are all great ballhandlers and that helped us a lot."
