DKV Joventut is one step away from advancing to the ULEB Cup eigthfinals as it stunned the Allianz Swans Gmunden on the road by 59-89 on Tuesday night. The Spanish team took off in the secodn quarter and never looked back, despite the Swans' efforts to try to stay in the fight. Demond Mallet led the winners with 28 points behind 6 of 9 three-pointers. Jerome Moiso added 15, Lubos Barton 11 and Rudy Fernandez, who was not on the starting five, 10. For Gmunden, Petter Hutter led the way with 15 points and Matthias Mayer added 13. The second game of the series will take place next Tuesday in Badalona, Spain as DKV Joventut will hold a 30-point advantage to face that second duel in order to advance to the next round.

Matthias Mayer started on fire for the Swans as he scored 7 of Gmunden's first 10 points without miss for a 10-7 lead for the hosts. However, Jerome Moiso and Pau Ribas scored straight buckets to put DKV Joventut ahead, 10-11. Starting at that moment, the guests started forging a more solid lead, and when Rudy Fernandez stepped on the court Joventut reached a 17-23 with his first basket that put an end to the first quarter. Joventut started the second period with a 0-7 burst capped by Edu Hernandez-Sonseca, but Mayer and two free throws by Peter Hutter got the Swans going. Demond Mallet however, had a good night from the arc and sank 4 of 5 threes to launch Joventut to a 26-45 lead in minute 17 after Rudy's new three. The quarter still had some time for a Ferran Laviña triple and a new bomb by Mallet to leave an almost decisive 28-51 at the break.

The third quarter started with Joventut dominating and quickly rising up to 33-61, but a 7-0 run by the hosts capped by Ian Boylan's basket made it 40-61. Joventut reacted and free throws by Mallet allowed the guests to rack up two more points to add to the score difference as the scoreboard showed a 44-69 after 30. Six points by Lubos Barton kept pushing Joventut in the last period while Gmunden never surrendered as Hutter's three made it 55-82 in minute 34. The last minutes of the game saw both teams waiting for the final buzzer as Joventut made things easier for the second game next week in Badalona with a 30-point final win.
