Reyer dumps Tofas for first victory

Umana Reyer Venice claimed its first victory of the 7DAYS EuroCup season by defeating Tofas Bursa 76-65 on Tuesday evening at Palasport Taliercio. Reyer used a 9-0 first-quarter run to take control for good and went on to lead by as many as 15 points before closing out the win and taking its record in Group B to 1-2. Tofas also now has a 1-2 record. Austin Daye paced the winning side with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Mike Bramos netted 14 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting and Ariel Filloy, Mitchell Watt and Stefano Tonut added 10 points apiece. Devin Williams stood out for Tofas with 28 points and 10 rebounds.

Tofas started well by getting the game’s first two baskets and Williams free throws made it 7-11 midway through the opening quarter. Watt scored twice in a 9-0 Reyer run that put the hosts in control. Sammy Mejia drew Tofas within 1 with a three-pointer, but Bramos matched him from downtown to make it 22-18 after 10 minutes. Filloy hit a three from the corner and Tonut fed Gasper Vidmar under the basket as Reyer surged to a double-digit lead, 31-20. Tonut extended the difference to 38-24 and Reyer coasted into the break leading 42-31. William scored the first 4 points of the second half to bring Tofas within 7. Mejia added a three-pointer and Williams continued to dominate inside as the visitors rallied to 46-42. Bramos came up big with a three-pointer and by drawing an offensive foul before Tonut restored a double-digit lead at 54-44. Reyer held on for a 58-49 advantage through three quarters. Triples by Daye and Filloy padded the Reyer margin. Daye added free throws to make it 66-51. Williams continued to pump in points for Tofas, but the visitors could not get any traction as Filloy and Daye ensured the hosts pocketed the win.

Telling stat

The big difference between the sides was in their three-point shooting. While Reyer impressed by making 45% of its threes (9 of 20), Tofas shot a measly 3 for 16 (18.8%). What’s more, Reyer had made just 11 threes combined (at 23.9%) in its previous two games this season, while Tofas had made 14 at 37.8%.

Tofas's very bright spot: Devin Williams

On a difficult night for Tofas, Devin Williams shined bright with 28 points and 10 rebounds. His point tally was not only the most by any player in the EuroCup so far this season, but it also tied teammate Sammy Mejia and Raymar Morgan for the club’s EuroCup single-game scoring record.

Finishing strong

At halftime, it appeared that Reyer’s biggest obstacle to winning the game was rebounding. Reyer played great defense to that point but had allowed 11 Tofas to take offensive rebounds. From that point on, Tofas only grabbed 2 more offensive boards.

What’s next?

Reyer remains at home for its next game, on Tuesday, October 22 against Limoges CSP. The following night, Tofas Bursa hosts Rytas Vilnius for a spot in the top half of the group table.

DE RAFFAELE, WALTER
Umana Reyer Venice
"A very important win for us after two losses, even if we played well, especially against Partizan. We were consistent in defense for 40 minutes and this is the key for us. We gave continuity to the game against Cantu. One of the game keys was to limit their main players like Lojeski and my team did a really great job. We need to keep going this way. When you win, you take confidence and tonight I got something from everybody."
ENE, ORHUN
Tofas Bursa
"First of all, I congratulate our opponents. Venice deserved to win this game. From our side, we don't have too much to talk about. Today is the first time our team didn't react offensively and defensively for 40 minutes. Sometimes a couple of players showed some reaction, but as a team, five persons at the same time, players who came from the bench didn't show any aggressiveness or intensity. Losing by 11 points doesn't show the difference if you ask me. We deserved to lose by more. I can understand my team also. We play a very tough schedule. This is not an excuse for them. That’s their job. This is the EuroCup. You cannot come and say 'today is not my day.' Every day is supposed to be your day personally and as a team. Today the team on the court wasn't the real Tofas team."

BRAMOS, MICHAEL

"I thought we played really good defense. They have really good shooters and we were able to shut them down for the most part. I thought we played with a lot better toughness and energy today."
DE NICOLAO, ANDREA
Umana Reyer Venice
"This is a very important victory, the first in the EuroCup, we needed it. The key to the game was the solid defense we played for 40 minutes. We limited their shooters and experienced players. We had a really good defensive game. I think we are moving in the right direction. Of course, we can keep growing."
WILLIAMS, DEVIN
Tofas Bursa
“We didn't play as good as we know we can play as a unit. The most important is keeping our heads up and showing character for this next week coming up. Staying together. It's a long season. Its only Game 3, so anything can happen the next couple of weeks can be the best weeks that we have. The most important thing is getting home, getting some rest, figuring out what we can change and how we can get better as a whole unit."
