Despite a rough first half, DKV Joventut managed to blast Swans Gmunden on Tuesday at home and took the win by 77-56. At the break the hosts were down by 3, but Rudy Fernandez, who had not played a single second in the first half, stormed on court with 20 points in 8 minutes with 5 of 6 triples to lead a 27-3 run for Joventut that blew the game up. It was all easy for the hosts from then as they take the series by a total 51 points, and will now meet Khimki in the Lat 16 series starting next March 11. Helping Rudy in Joventut were Jan-Hendrick Jagla with 13 points and Pau Ribas with 12. For the Swans, Kevin Johnson had 16 points and Matthias Mayer posted 11.
In the first quarter Matthias Mayer led the way for the guests with 6 points as his triple made it soon 4-7. Ricky Rubio replied for Joventut and Pau Ribas soon added a three for the hosts' first lead, 13-10, but Kevin Johnson hit four straight points to put the Swans back in command, 18-20, when some technical difficulties stopped the game. After the problems were solved, a basket by Demond Mallet left the game tied after 10 minutes, 20-20. Defenses ruled in the second quarter as the Swans managed to keep Joventut at only 9 points during that period. Rashard Sullivan led the offense for the guests but Ricky managed to pull off a three-point play to leave Joventut trailing by three points at the break, 29-32.
After resumption it just seemed that DKV Joventut decided to put an end to the situation and when Rudy Fernandez stepped on court, he turned the game upside down leading Joventut to a 27-3 run with his 20 points in 8 minutes including 5 of 6 triples. The Swans reacted but it was way too late when the hosts were already out of reach. Johnson was the man for Gmunden but by minute 29 the score was 61-44, and it developed to 64-46 after 30 minutes. The last quarter was a mere formality in which defense appeared again for both sides, but Joventut cruised to the Last 16 where it will meet Khimki starting on March 11.
