Khimki steals valuable win in Munich

Khimki Moscow Region recorded its first road win of the 2019-20 EuroLeague season by downing FC Bayern Munich 74-87 at Audi Dome on Thursday. Khimki improved to 3-1 in the standings while Bayern dropped to 2-2. Alexey Shved led the winners with 19 points, Anthony Gill added 17 and Janis Timma and Devin Booker each had 13 for Khimki. Greg Monroe led Bayern with 18 points and Vladimir Lucic and Maodo Lo each added 12 apiece for the hosts. Monroe led a 10-0 run which allowed Bayern to shake off a slow start and get a 19-17 lead after 10 minutes. Monroe and Lucic kept Bayern ahead, 37-36, but Timma, Gill and Booker combined for all the points in an 0-20 run that gave Khimki a 37-56 lead early in the third quarter. Khimki kept a 55-70 margin at the end of the third quarter and didn't have much trouble cruising to a well-deserved win.

Booker got Khimki going with a turnaround jumper, igniting a 0-6 opening run that Timma capped with a reverse layup. Lo rescued Bayern with a triple, but Shved fed Dairis Bertans for a jumper and added a layup-plus-foul for a 5-11 Khimki lead. Monroe stepped up with 6 points in the paint in a 10-0 run that Nihad Dedovic capped with a a put-back basket that made it 15-11. Shved added another three-point play, but Dedovic and Danilo Barthel boosted the hosts' lead to 19-14. Jonas Jerebko struck from downtown to keep Khimki within 19-17 after 10 minutes. Jeremy Evans dunked early in the second quarter and a three-pointer by Timma gave Khimki a 19-22 edge. Alex King and Lo each struck from downtown, but so did Timma to even things at 25-25. Vyacheslav Zaytsev scored in penetration only to see Monroe and Lucic give Bayern a 31-27 lead. Shved and Booker tried to change things for the visitors and a driving layup by Bertans helped his team regain the elad, 35-36. Timma bettered Lucic's slam with a bomb from beyond the arc and then Gill followed a three-pointer with a layup for a 37-44 Khimki lead at halftime.

Gill hit a baseline jumper soon after the break and Booker followed a put-back layup with a jumper that caused Bayern to call timeout at 37-50. Gill added a three-point play and a triple by Booker capped a mammoth 0-20 run, breaking the game open at 37-56. Lo and Gill traded three-pointers and a layp by Lucic made it 42-59. Paul Zipser and Dedovic tried to ignite a Bayern comeback, but Shved and Sergey Monia kept Khimki way ahead, 55-70, after 30 minutes. The hosts needed a quick comeback to return to the game, but three-pointers by Monya and Jerebko boosted Khimki's margin to 60-78 with 7 minutes left. Barthel led an 8-0 run which brought Bayern within 68-78 but Shved and Gill sealed the outcome, 68-84, long before the final buzzer.

Pivotal performer

Shved opened the game strong, dishing 4 assists in the opening 5 minutes and hitting the right shots at the right time. He finished the game with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists to amass a PIR of 21 in a winning effort.

Game-changing moment

A huge dunk by Lucic gave Bayern its last lead, 37-36. Timma answered from downtown, igniting a 0-20 run in which Gill, who had been held scoreless until that moment, had 10 points. Booker added the remainding 7 points, including a triple to cap it.

Stellar stat

Khimki shot the ball better than Bayern. Khimki buried 19 of 33 two-point shots (57.6%) and hit 12 of 23 from downtown (52.2%). Bayern's percentages were lower (48.6% 2FG, 37.5% 3FG). Khimki forced Bayern into 19 turnovers, matching the German powerhouse's club record. It previously committed 19 turnovers against Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar on April 10, 2014.

Did you notice?

It was Khimki's first win after six consecutive losses against the German powerhouse. Bayern had beaten Khimki four times in the EuroLeague and twice in the 7DAYS EuroCup since their first meeting back in 2015.

Next game

These teams return to Turkish Airlines EuroLeague action earlier than usual next week due to the first two-round week of the season. Khimki hosts Panathinaikos OPAP Athens on Tuesday, October 29. A day later, Bayern welcomes Real Madrid.

"First of all, congratulations to Khimki on the win. They deserved it. They played better than us. The most important part was the last two minutes of the first half and the beginning of the second half. It was quite bad and they controlled the game after that. Except Shved, they had excellent three-point shooting percentages and also, if you want to win, you cannot have 19 turnovers, for sure. In the first half, we had a good result, hitting open shots and layups, but it was the opposite after that. They scored three-pointers 2-3 times, Timma was important in that part and then we continued to play like that with a lot of turnovers. We will analyze that, of course. It is too much, especially at home - 19 turnovers. After a few games, we finally controlled the rebounds, but it was not enough."
KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
Khimki Moscow Region
"I am happy. We had too many turnovers in the first two quarter, 12, too many for a game like this. I am happy that my players understood that this is wrong. We controlled the game, were concentrated until the end and I think it is a good win. For sure, all the teams want to play defense, but not every time teams play like their coaches want - if that happened, it would be 0-0! Anyway, we will put our offense and for sure, when we are scoring, we are confident and for sure, we played good defense tonight. We have no VTB League games at the end of this week, so we will get one day off, for sure."

Players

SHVED, ALEXEY
Khimki Moscow Region
"It is more important to win the game today [than my individual performance], because in the last few years, we lost all the games against Bayern, so it is big-time for us. Our team played really great today, we played defense. We are just happy to win tonight. We just played well for 3-4 minutes and went up 20, because the game was tight in the opening two quarters. Maybe it was a bad day for Bayern, but everybody knows they are a good team. I don't think it was an easy game for us - both teams wanted to win and played great. We have five days off now and can rest a bit. Panathinaikos [Khimki's next opponent] is a great team and they play hard and tough every time. We have time to think how we are going to play the next game."
GILL, ANTHONY
Khimki Moscow Region
"For me, I just do what Coach asks me, no matter if I score 3 points in the game or how many I scored tonight. We played a great team defensive game tonight. They are a great team and this is a hard place to play and for us to get the win here is huge. We played as a team and everybody stepped up, which we needed to have. It is going to be a tough game [against Panathinaikos]. Whether they are home or away, they are an amazing team. We have to be physical and ready to play defense. We have to play team basketball. If we don't do that, we are not going to stand a chance."
