Dynamo Moscow defeated PGE Turow big by 78-63

Dynamo Moscow advanced to the ULEB Cup semifinals by downing PGE Turow Zgorzelec 78-63 in their quarterfinal showdown at Palavela in Torino, Italy on Friday. As such, the 2006 ULEB Cup champion returns to the semifinals for the second time in three years and still has the chance to become the first team to win two ULEB Cup titles in competition history. Meanwhile, Turow goes back home once it became the first Polish teams to reach the ULEB Cup quarterfinals. Henry Domercant led the winners with 22 points. His 6-for-6 three-pointers become a new ULEB Cup elimination rounds record for more shots from downtown made without a miss. Milos Vujanic had 16 points, Robertas Javtokas added 15 while Travis Hansen got 10 for Dynamo. David Logan had 19 points for Turow while Thomas Kelati added 15. Vujanic and Javtokas led Dynamo in a 20-9 opening run, but Logan and Kelati shined in the second quarter to put Turow ahead, 30-33. Domercant and Antonis Fotsis allowed Dynamo to regain the lead, 43-38, at halftime. Domercant fired in 4 shots from downtown in the third quarter to boost Dynamo's lead to double digits, 61-49, after three quarters. Turow did not recover, allowing Dynamo to cruise to a well-deserved win.

Dragisa Drobnjak got the scoring started for Turow with a jump hook that finished a long offense. Vujanic then sparked Dynamo with a floating layup to which he added a driving basket for a 4-2 Dynamo lead. Vujanic capped a 7-0 Dynamo run with a three-pointer but Kelati answered with a seven-meter bomb as Turow pulled within 7-5. Javtokas scored inside to add to Dynamo's lead as Turow kept trying to slow down the tempo, but failed to get open shots. Meanwhile, Hansen made a free throw and Domercant a driving layup, forcing Turow to call timeout at 12-5. Logan hit foul shots that Javtokas bettered with a layup-plus-free throw. Andres Rodriguez fed Mario Skecic for an easy basket for Turow, but Vujanic scored in penetration for a 17-9 Dynamo lead. A jumper by Hansen gave Dynamo its first double-digit lead, 20-9 before Logan struck from downtown and soon dunked it off a steal to bring Turow back to life at 20-14. Fotsis for Dynamo and Kelati for Turow joined the three-point shootout but an unstoppable Javtokas kept Dynamo ahead 25-17 at the end of one quarter, at which time Turow had but a single rebound.

Logan buried his second three-pointer to start the second quarter. After Dynamo committed a 24-second violation, Robert Witka struck from downtown for Turow and Kelati tied the score at 25-25 with a layup. Following a Dynamo timeout, Logan scored again off a midcourt steal to complete a 0-10 run that opened the quarter with his team taking its first lead, 25-27. Domercant took over with his first three-pointer but Witka quickly put Turow back ahead, 28-29. Logan provided a highlight with a wild power basket that Sergey Monya matched with free throws. Dynamo kept struggling to score against Turow's defensive intensity while free throws by Drobnjak gave his team a 30-33 edge. Soon, however, Domercant sank a corner triple and Dmitri Domani scored off an inbound play to restore a 35-33 Dynamo edge. Fotsis also struck from downtown to make Turow call a much-needed timeout at 38-33. Domercant capped a 10-0 run with a layup but Kelati answered with a three-pointer at 40-36. Drobnjak fed Kelati for an easy layup, but Javtokas made a free throw and Vujanic a driving layup to fix Dynamo's halftime advantage at 43-38.

Both teams struggled to score after the break, as Turow kept trying to collect steals by covering the passing lines. Dynamo even struggled to get shots now but Javtokas stepped into the void with a jump hook. Logan finished a long, two-chance Turow offense with a five-meter jumper but Domercant immediately answered from downtown for a 48-40 Dynamo lead. Turow kept finding problems to stop Javtokas but a driving layup by Drobnjak kept his team within 48-42. Domercant sank another triple but Drobnjak came up big for Turow with an off-balance layup. Domercant nailed another shot from downtown, and yet another one - his sixth in as many attempts, this time from the corner in front of two defenders - to make Turow call timeout at 57-45 after 26 minutes. Turow continued struggling to score, however, as Javtokas had a big block on Witka and then sank a jump-hook at the other end, making it a 14-point game, 59-45. Kelati tried to ignite a Turow comeback with free throws while Skecic added a layup at 59-49 deficit, but Sergey Bykov nailed a floating layup to give Dynamo a 61-49 margin after three quarters. Dynamo had buried 9-for-12 three-pointers in the opening 30 minutes.

Turow needed a fast comeback to keep its semifinal options alive but Dynamo was now slowing the game tempo to maximize its options. Witka stepped up with a second-chance basket than Hansen matched with a long two-pointer. Time was running out for Turow, that kept struggling to score around the basket. Meanwhile, a three-pointer by Hansen broke the game open, 66-51, with 7 minutes to go. Turow called timeout but Witka scored in the paint but Javtokas matched it with yet another jump hook. Logan struck from downtown but Dynamo kept following its game plan to perfection against a tired Turow, with Rodriguez, Kelati and Logan playing almost non-stop. Rodriguez found his first points on free throws while but Drobnjak missed twice from the line. By the time Hansen nailed another jumper, hundreds of Dynamo fans were already celebrating that their team will keep fighting for the ULEB Cup title. Meanwhile, Turow had a bitter end to an otherwise fantastic ULEB Cup season.

PESIC, SVETISLAV

"It was a very difficult game for our team. We had time to prepare the game against Turow, a team that plays with excellent team defense concepts. Our experience, or maybe my experience, told me that if a team plays defense like Turow has, not only tonight, but all season in almost all the games, with 100 percent motivation, then we have to do the same. We won the game because we played defense on the same level as Turow. We played excellent defense, especially on Logan and Kelati, who is an excellent player that fans will see make a great career. Stopping these two excellent players was a great job done by my players. Our concentration and continuity, holding Logan to two points and Kelati to five in the second half, made it easier to play afterwards. We got confidence on offense, made some three-point shots and controlled the game. Our own two American players, Domercant and Hansen, played excellent defense against the other two. When they play excellent defense, it gives them good concentration on their shots, and we found a balance between the outside game and inside games. Javtokas made important points inside, and Domercant in the third quarter and later Travis got their shot rhythm and that was one reason we controlled the game. So we are happy and ready for the next game."
FILIPOVSKI, SASO
PGE Turów Zgorzelec
"Dynamo showed he are a very strong team that also have great individuals. They made 70% of their three-point shots and evenm when we tried to play good defense, they shot very well. I want to congratulate my team because they never give up even when they played against a better team. Dynamo played good defense, too, and coach Svetislav Pesic knows how to stop shooters from scoring. David Logan played well but our rivals showed their talent and shot very well tonight. I am proud of my team. In my opinion, Dynamo will play the final against DKV Joventut."

Players

DOMERCANT, HENRY
Dynamo Moscow
"We feel very good. That was a great team with great scorers. We're just real happy with our defense and that gives us a little more confidence for tomorrow. I didn't know I made six of six three-pointers. Thank god. I certainly shot a lot this week and made a lot of extra repetitions, so I am sure that helped. I hope I can keep it going. Coach drilled us this week and we worked very hard and came together and helped each other a lot on defense. I've got to thank Javtokas, who came out and helped me on numerous pick-and-rolls. We played as a team. We've got to try to build on this and keep 'em rolling."
VUJANIC, MILOS
Dynamo Moscow
"We are happy that we won this game, it was hard. Turow played real good defense but in the second half we did very well. We played strong defense on their two American guys and the result was good for us. But this is only the first part of this tournament, we have to forget this game immediately and win two more if we want to lift the trophy. From this moment on we only have to think about the next game, no matter who the rival is."
MONIA, SERGEY
Dynamo Moscow
"It was a very important game. We are happy that we won and now we just have to get ready for tomorrow. Unics or Girona we will see today. We showed that we can play good defense. Everybody is ready to try to win three games in three days, we came here for that. To be champions it is a very difficult game but we will try."
HANSEN, TRAVIS
Dynamo Moscow
"The first half we had a little trouble on defense and allowed them to take some decent shots. In the second half we did better. We held Logan and Kelati to less points, 7 points total between them in the second half, and then things started happening for us. Team defense always aimed to stop their best scorers. This is a fun tournament, two more wins in two days if we want to make it."
JAVTOKAS, ROBERTAS
Dynamo Moscow
"It was a very tough game, they are big fighters. That came as no surprise anyway, but to face them is a different thing than watching them on TV. They never surrender and kept going until the end of the game. I think we showed we were stronger and that's why we won. I don't prefer any rival for the semifinals, they are both strong and it doesn't really matter who gets in. Kazan we know them a little from having played in the Russian League but whoever we meet in semis we will have to play 100 percent to make it to the last step."
KELATI, THOMAS
PGE Turów Zgorzelec
"Dynamo has two great shooters in Henry Domercant and Travis Hansen and they did a good job tonight. Domercant made 6-for-6 three-pointers tonight, so that says it all. He made very good shots and Dynamo showed it is a very good team. We showed we are competitive team, and nobody expected us to be in the Final Eight at the beginning of the season. One our goals was that and I wish we could have accomplished more. Saso Filipovski is a great coach and you have to give him credit."
DROBNJAK, DRAGISA
PGE Turów Zgorzelec
"Dynamo showed their talent tonight. Every time we were a little bit late or relaxed a bit, they punished us. That shows the quality of a team. You have to focus on everything for 40 minutes to beat Dynamo. We allowed him to hit a lot of three-pointers and that was the key tonight. Henry Domercant is a great shooter and there is nothing to add about this. Ypou cannot even let him receive the ball. Every time he gets the ball, he is dangerous. You always wonder if you can do better and I think we could have done so tonight."
LJUBOTINA, SLOBODAN
PGE Turów Zgorzelec
"We should have played much better defense against Henry Domercant, who was unstoppable tonight. He didn't miss a shot but Dynamo also has a great team and a lot of good individuals. Every time we left anyone open, Dynamo punished us immediately. We played well in the first half but everything changed in the third quarter. We can now win the Polish League, but we cannot underestimate anybody."
RODRIGUEZ, ANDRES
PGE Turów Zgorzelec
"Henry Domercant was one of the keys tonight. He scored 6-for-6 three-pointers with some incredible shots in front of his defender. We played good defense against him but a good player is the one who makes the tough shots. He made it and that was the key tonight. In 2-3 plays where we thought we had very good defense, he came out of nowhere and hit two big shots, broke the game and we could not come back. We can make the Euroleague by winning the Polish League. It is a tough league, with a lot of good players. We will do our job and see it we can win the title. We reached very far in the ULEB Cup this season and hoped we could upset Dynamo in this game, but it just didn't happen. I am happy with my teammates, everyone left his heart on the floor. We couldn't make it, so we hope we will do it next time."
