Sam Van Rossom - Valencia Basket - EC13 (photo Valencia Basket)Valencia Basket improved to 2-0 and became the only undefeated team in Group C by downing Ratiopharm Ulm 88-74 at home on Wednesday. Ulm now joins Union Olimpija, Asvel Villeurbanne and Cimberio Varese in a four-way tie for second place in Group A. Sam Van Rossom paced the winners with 19 points. All-Eurocup forward Justin Doellman added 17 on 3-of-3 three-point shots, 7 rebounds and 3 steals while Serhiy Lishchuk, Oliver Lafayette and last season's Eurocup Rising Star Bojan Dubljevic each had 11 points for Valencia. Trent Plaisted led Ulm with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Daniel Theis added 13 points while Cam Long had 10 for the guests. Valencia led 30-20 after 10 minutes and kept a 49-40 margin at halftime. Ulm tried to rally early in the second half but Valencia boosted its margin to 67-52 after 30 minutes and sealed the outcome, 75-57, long before the final buzzer.

Valencia had a really strong start, as a layup by Van Rossom and a three-pointer by Rafa Martinez gave the hosts a 9-4 lead. Martinez insisted from downtown and Van Rossom joined the three-point shootout for a 17-8 lead. Philip Schwethelm and Keaton Nankivil tried to change things for Ulm but Romain Sato, an outstanding Lishchuk and a three-pointer by Lafayette allowed Valencia to get a 30-20 lead after 10 minutes. Lafayette kept pacing Valencia with a jumper and Van Rossom soon made it a 15-point game, 35-20. Nankivil and Theis fueled a 0-9 run which gave Ulm some hope at 35-29. Van Rossom stayed on fire and got help from Doellman and Juanjo Triguero to restore a 46-32 Valencia lead. Theis and Long stepped up for Ulm but another triple by Lafayette fixed the halftime score at 49-40. Doellman nailed one from beyond the arc right after the break but Trent Plaisted and Long brought Ulm closer, 52-44. Ulm went scoreless for more than 5 minutes, however, and a three-pointer by Dubljevic broke the game open, 58-44, after a 6-0 run. Three-pointers by Lafayette, Doellman and Martinez - at the third quarter buzzer- gave Valencia a 67-52 margin after 30 minutes. Dubljevic followed a triple with a layup-plus-foul and a basket by Vladimir Lucic sealed the outcome, 75-57. Ulm managed to get within 82-71 with over 2 minutes left but it was already too little, too late for the guests.

"Sometimes things look easier than they really are. We faced a tough team that never gives up, even when they are trailing by an important margin. Ulm is a very good team and in that sense, we cannot be very happy because we start scoring a lot, the team stopped playing good defense. It happened to us in the first quarter, when we scored fluidly but stopped being tough on defense. We have good teams in this group from the very beginning - all of them play in important domestic leagues. We have to respect our opponents, knowing that they play good basketball. I am not unhappy with the work we did on offense - we rebounded better. We have to be realistic - Ulm is a tough team that reached the German League finals and the Eurocup quarterfinals last season. It is a good team but we didn't have problems to win the game. We struggled during the game and had ups and downs."
LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
Ratiopharm Ulm
"First of all, congratulations to coach Perasovic and Valencia Basket for a deserved win. They had a great start and overall hurt us with their three-point shooting. We were able to win the second and the fourth quarter but it is not enough such a good team like Valencia when you down 12-14 points. We had good moments during the game but overall, if we want to beat Valencia, we have to play a perfect game."

"We know this a tough group and Ulm is a team which scores fluently. We have fought on defense and that was the key to beat them."
SOSA, EDGAR

"Valencia is a good team, they have a lot of good players. We didn’t start well and Valencia deserved the win. We must continue improving as a team."
