Alba Berlin scores pivotal road win at Dinamo Sassari

Alba Berlin escaped from a sold out PalaSerradimigni with an 83-91 victory over Banco di Sardegna Sassari in Game 1 of their eighthfinal series on Wednesday in Sardinia, Italy. The decisive second showdown is next week at O2 World in the German capital, where Alba will advance to the quarterfinals with a victory or by losing by up to 7 points. A 2-11 run late in the second quarter fueled by back-to-back dunks from Jonas Wohlfarth and Vojdan Stojanovski gave a 40-47 margin to Berlin. Later 9 consecutive points scored by Reggie Redding and Levon Kendall pushed the visitors to a 66-80 advantage, which the home team was unable to recover from. Leon Radosevic paced the winners with an outstanding performance, collecting 24 points on 9-of-13 two-point shooting plus 6 rebounds for a performance index rating of 28. David Logan added 18 with 4 assists, Reggie Redding drilled 17 with 6 boards and Levon Kendall netted 11. Caleb Green chipped in 19 points, Drew Gordon amassed a double-double of 18 points and 11 boards, and Drake Diener posted 13 for Sassari.

Radosevic opened the scoring with a huge dunk, which was answered by Caleb Green from downtown. Drew Gordon’s put back tied things at 5-5 before Logan scored 4 points in a row to cap a 7-0 run for Alba, which took a 5-12 lead. Gordon dunked to make it 11-12, however the visitors tried again to escape and soared to 13-21 on Redding free throws. After Massimo Chessa nailed a triple, Radosevic’s layup made it 18-26. Chessa and Caleb Green scored free throws for the home team, and Redding hit a jumper for a 22-30 margin for Alba after 10 minutes. Sassari opened the second quarter with an 11-1 run fueled by Manuel Vanuzzo with 2 three-pointers to go ahead on 33-31. Redding tied things by converting an offensive rebound. Then Gordon’s jam excited the crowd. Travis Diener scored his first triple to make it 38-36, but he was copied by Logan for the guests who bagged 11 unanswered points to go up 38-47. Chessa, from the foul line, netted a pair to finish 40-47 at halftime.

Drew free throws cut the margin to 44-47, Logan and Drake Diener jumpers made it 48-49, but the visiting team remained focused and gained a 52-58 advantage through Jan Jagla at the midway point of the quarter. Caleb Green’s deep three and free throws put Sassari closer, 57-60. Akeem Vargas and Vanuzzo hit three-pointers, and Redding’s put back gave a 60-65 cushion to the German side. Marques Green scored his first basket of the game to make it 64-67. Radosevic answered with 4 points to lead 64-71 entering the last quarter. Caleb Green grabbed an offensive rebound and scored for a 66-71 advantage, but Redding and Levon Kendall remained on fire scoring all 9 points to lead 66-80. Gordon posted free throws before Radosevic scored jumpers to make it 71-86 with three and a half minutes left in the game. The Dieners each connected to climb within 77-88, but Radosevic’s put back sealed Alba's win with less than a minute left. Caleb Green hit from beyond the arc to cut the final difference to 8.

Head Coaches

SACCHETTI, ROMEO
Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari
"We are not quite mentally ready yet to play this kind of game. They played very tough, but we gave them lots of opportunities in backdoor situations, rebounds and tap-ins. We made a good effort in the first half, but we needed to come back from it. We lost easy points on small details and this made all the difference. They played very physically and we suffered on this point. This is the step to becoming a better team. We want to go to Berlin to play another game and to fight till the end."
OBRADOVIC, SASA
Alba Berlin
"We played a great game from the first minute. We played tough and physical against a team during their best moment. But it is only the first half and we have to repeat the same game in Berlin. We have to be ready to play against their shooters and defend our 8-point advantage."

Players

DIENER, TRAVIS
Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari
"They’re a very difficult team, very physical and they played very well. We’ll go next week to Berlin and try to change something and fight to the end. We’ll keep going on to play better and play our cards right. Their players are really good on pick and roll situations on our guards, but we missed a couple of open shots."
