Shermadini leads Unicaja to first road win

Unicaja grabbed its first road win of the 2018-19 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season by topping Mornar Bar 85-96 in Montenegro on Wednesday. Unicaja improved to 2-1 in the standings while Mornar dropped to 1-2. Giorgi Shermadini paced the winners with 26 points on 11-of-14 two-point shooting plus 1 three-pointer. Jaime Fernandez added 14 points and 7 assists, Adam Waczynski had 13 while Kyle Wiltjer and Mathias Lessort each got 11 for Unicaja. Bronson Koenig paced Mornar with 19 points, Nemanja Vranes added 13 and Strahinja Micovic had 10 for the hosts.

A reverse alley-oop dunk by Uros Lukovic and three-pointers by Vranes and Koenig gave Mornar an early 11-6 lead. Wiltjer and Shermadini fueled a 0-9 Unicaja run and Fernandez took over late in the first quarter for a 23-27 edge after 10 minutes. Mornar fought back to tie the game at 29-29 on a jumper by Khadeen Carrington. It didn't last long, however, as Shermadini, Waczynski and Dani Diez led a 2-14 run that made it a double-digit game, 31-43. Koenig and Lukovic brought Mornar within 37-47 at halftime. Lukovic and Vranes stepped up after the break and a jump hook by Micovic caused Unicaja to call timeout at 46-51. A triple by Vukota Pavic brought the hosts even closer, 52-54, but Shermadini and Fernandez helped Unicaja restore a 61-67 margin after 30 minutes. Waczynski followed a triple with a six-meter jumper, which prompted a Mornar timeout at 64-74 early in the fourth quarter. A three-pointer by Shermadini sealed the outcome, 70-85, as the hosts never recovered.

Pivotal performer

Shermadini posted EuroCup career-high numbers in points (26) and performance index rating (34) - by far. His previous records where 15 points and a PIR of 20 with Basket Zaragoza in the 2013-14 season. Most impressive is that Shermadini did all that damage in just 21 minutes and 30 seconds on the court.

Game-changing moment

With Unicaja up 64-67 early in the fourth quarter, Fernandez grabbed an offensive board that allowed Waczynski to hit a triple. Shermadini scored off a steal and another offensive rebound by Carlos Suarez allowed Waczynski to score again for a 10-point lead. Unicaja never looked back after that.

Stellar stat

Unicaja just had 3 turnovers in the second half and dished 9 assists after the break. In that time, Mornar had 4 assists and 5 turnovers.

Did you notice?

Jaime Fernandez had 7 assists - a career-best for the Spanish combo guard. His previous record was 5 with Morabanc Andorra against UNICS Kazan last season.

Mornar visits Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt next Wednesday. A day earlier, Unicaja hosts UNICS Kazan in a battle of former EuroCup champions.

"First of all, I want to congratulate Unicaja and their coach. When we were preparing this game, I was warning our players that we have to be very, very smart against this type of team. They are experience, have high quality and when you start to play some non-organized basketball, they will punish you immediately. That is exactly what happened. If you remember, we were in the game in the first 15 minutes, played very smart and knew what we were looking in our offense. Everything was good. After that, we had five offenses in a row that players tried to do something on their own. Basketball is not one against five and they immediately punished us, getting a 10-point lead at halftime. We came back in the third quarter and started playing really good basketball. After the third quarter, we were down six points, in the game because the way that we play, we can change a game with two shots. The crucial moment was when we were four points down, I think. They missed a shot and after that, hit a three-point shot and after that, the next offenses, they hit three more three-point shots, and the game was over. I am not sad, we showed today against a very good team that we can play. We are going up, step by step, after the last two wins, I am quite satisfied with some periods on this game. I hope that, in the future, we will play better and better."

"We played very well in offense in the first half but the third quarter was difficult for us. In that moment, we played very good defense and in the fourth quarter, we were very successful from the three-point line. We have to go step by step but now, I am very happy for this win."

"I think we played very well on offense in the first half. The team shared the ball very well and during the second half, especially in the third quarter, we had difficulties on offense. We didn't share the ball and didn't look for open shots. It was difficult, but we played very good defense in the fourth quarter and were successful from the three-point line. That allowed us to win the game. I think Mornar is a fast team, with dangerous three-point shooters. Their big man can also hit open shots and are strong under the basket. I think it is a very good team and I am not saying this because their coaches are here! Mornar played very well in Turin and also against Partizan in the Adriatic League. It is a difficult first month, but we played solid, with good team chemistry, and we won. It is very important and we have to keep believing."
