Efes outlasts Panathinaikos in 2OT classic

In just the 11th double-overtime showdown in competition history, Anadolu Efes Istanbul battled for 50 minutes to defeat Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens 91-83 at home on Friday. Efes improved to 2-3, while Panathinaikos dropped to 3-2. Thomas Huertel led the winners with 17 points and DeShaun Thomas scored 13, while three of their teammates tallied double-doubles. Tyler Honeycutt had 15 points and 13 rebounds, Bryant Dunston got 12 and 11 and Derrick Brown posted 11 and 11. K.C. Rivers led Panathinaikos with 15 points, including a floater that forced the second overtime at 77-77. Nikos Pappas added 13, James Gist netted 12 points and 11 rebounds, Demetris Nichols had 11 points and Nick Calathes scored 10 and dished 12 assists for Panathinaikos, which buried 7-of-12 three-point shots (58.3%) to get a 35-42 lead at the break. Things changed after the break, as Efes outrebounded its opponents 48-36 and held Panathinaikos to just 3-of-18 three-point shooting (16.7%) after halftime.

The greens started well before Thomas Heurtel struck from downtown to give Efes its first lead, 16-15. A layup by Calathes and a three-pointer by Lefteris Bochoridis restored a 16-20 Panathinaikos lead after 10 minutes. Ioannis Bourousis, Pappas and Antonis Fotsis joined the three-point shootout to boost the guests' lead to 22-32 early in the second quarter. Heurtel and Honeycutt fueled an 8-0 run that brought Efes back to life, 30-32. Pappas rescued Panathinaikos with 5 unanswered points in a 0-8 run that Rivers capped with a triple for a 35-42 halftime margin. Efes found a go-to guy in Honeycutt soon after the break, as he had back-to-back layups and 3 rebounds in an 11-0 run that Dunston capped with free throws for a 46-42 Efes lead. Gist and Pappas tried to change things for Panathinaikos and an off-balance jump hook by Bourousis tied it at 48-48. Thomas hit a three-pointer and Dunston added free throws, but Gist and Nichols tied the game again, 53-53, after 30 minutes. Granger followed free throws with a critical triple for a 68-65 Efes lead with less than three minutes to go. Nichols answered from downtown and a layup by Pappas put the guests back ahead, 68-70, with 1:10 left. Cotton tied the game with a driving layup, 70-70 and Nichols and Honeycutt missed from downtown at the end of regulation. Efes led by 2 late in the overtime period, but used a couple of non-shooting fouls and left Panathinaikos 4 seconds for a final shot, but Rivers hit a driving layup to send the game to a second overtime. Brown hit free throws and Honeycutt downed a three-pointer for an 82-77 Efes lead early in overtime. Cotton buried a four-meter jumper and free throws by Honeycutt seemed to seal the outcome at 86-77. Gist and Rivers brought Panathinaikos back to life, 86-83, but an alley-oop layup by Brown stopped the guests' comeback and Efes celebrated in the end.

"I think it was a very difficult game because we started very bad, with 9 turnovers in the first quarter. After that, we had to work harder to catch them. The third quarter was the best for us, when we started really well, especially our defense in the opening three minutes of the second half. From that moment, the game was open until the end. Sometimes it is incredible how we have chances to finish the game, but we make mistakes which are very, very difficult to understand. They stayed in the game, especially in the moments when we had the lead. I think our rebounds, hustle and fight were the keys to out victory but we cannot think we played a special game. We can improve our basketball and do much more. Tyler [Honeycutt] was the guy who brought energy and something different. He plays over the rim and changed many shots. His good performance was very important for us tonight. As for Bourousis, it is always nice to see the guys who had good results with me as coach. I like him a lot and I am happy that he missed this layup in the final minutes. We played very tough defense against him. I wish him and Xavi [Pascual], a great coach, the best."

"First of all, congratulations to Anadolu Efes Istanbul for this win. It was a close game, a very close game. I think that we lost the game because we lost control in the beginning of the third period. In those moments, we lost the lead we had and then it was a new game, a close one. Both teams, I think, had the opportunity to win the game, but in the end we lost and we know that we need to improve a lot in the future."

"I feel a little tired, but everything is better after a win. We started the game out pretty bad and they kind of got rolling, but we played hard to get back in the game and made some good plays down the stretch. We were smart with the fouls, I think. We did a good job and towards the end, we had some fouls to cut the clock down a little bit. They made some good baskets, but we pulled out the win. We cannot have so many turnovers normally and win the game. We had 9 turnovers in the first quarter. We cannot do that or we will be behind every game."
FELDEINE, JAMES
Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens
"We were very close to winning the game, but we failed. We made serious turnovers and we lost many rebounds. It is very hard to lose after two overtimes.”
