Strasbourg improved to 3-0 in Group A with a tough 59-66 victory over Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia on Tuesday in Bologna, Italy. The hosts led by 2 entering the fourth quarter and were still within 1 with three minutes to go, but Ali Traore scored two important baskets down the stretch to help seal the win. Traore finished with a game-high 16 points. The result dropped Reggio Emilia to 1-2. Axel Toupane added 13 points for Strasbourg, Matt Howard scored 11 and Louis Campbell tallied 10 points and 6 assists, while Antoine Diot posted 4 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Strasbourg outrebounded the home team 24-36. Rimantas Kaukenas led Reggio Emilia with 13 points and Andrea Cinciarini added 12.

Campbell scored the game’s first basket for Strasbourg before Kaukenas got Reggio Emilia on the scoreboard. The team traded baskets until a Bangaly Fofana slam gave Strasbourg a 6-10 lead. Donell Taylor fed Ksistof Lavrinovic inside to keep the hosts within 10-12 at the end of a low-scoring first quarter. Taylor tied the game with a three-pointer to make it 15-15 two-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter. Howard and Paul Lacombe put the visitors in front, but Reggio Emilia answered with 9 straight points and took the lead on another Taylor three. Lavrinovic made it 24-19 before Campbell and Howard brought Strasbourg within 1. Kaukenas with a tough layup and 2 free throws extended the Reggio Emilia lead. Howard split free throws, but a Cinciarini carved up the Strasbourg defense for a layup that made it 32-25 at halftime.

The break did not do the hosts well as Strasbourg held Reggio Emilia scoreless for the first three minutes of the second half during which Howard scored twice. Diot soon closed the gap to 33-32 and Traore put the visitors ahead. Riccardo Cervi’s basket-plus-foul restored a Reggio Emilia lead at 38-35 midway through the quarter. Amedeo Della Valle connected on his first three, but the visitors stayed close, came within 1 twice and grabbed a 44-46 lead on Strasbourg and Campbell’s first three of the game. Taylor tied the game from the line and Federico Mussini’s fast break layup gave Reggio Emilia a 48-46 lead through three quarters. Fofana tied the to start the fourth, but Mussini flashed his speed on a drive to the hoop. Toupane connected from behind the arc to put Strasbourg up 50-53. After a timeout, Kaukenas tied the game with a three, but Toupane made another from the same spot. Diot gave Strasbourg a 4-point edge and an easy Traore basket with a minute and a half remaining made it 57-63. A Toupane free throw with 53 seconds left essentially wrapped up the victory for Strasbourg.

Head Coaches

MENETTI, MASSIMILIANO
Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia
"We knew what we were getting into tonight. Strasbourg is a very physical team. We made some silly mistakes in the second half of the game and they cost us a lot. It was a tough game, but we played well. It was not easy to remain in the game for three quarters. We have to learn to deal with opponents at this level and we have to react when they don’t let you play as you would like to do. Strasbourg is a really strong team, unbeaten in both Eurocup and their league and tonight we saw why."
COLLET, VINCENT
Strasbourg
"This game had two faces, we played well defensively, not offensively. Especially in the first half, we had little patience, but things went better in the second half, when we passed the ball in a better way and we found the right rhythm. Great credit to Reggio Emilia, this team was a tough opponent. I'm happy for this victory; it’s really important for us because it helps us to get a good position in Group A and brings us one step closer to the qualification for the second round of the Eurocup."

Players

CINCIARINI, ANDREA
Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia
"We faced an undefeated team, we knew it would be a tough game and they would do everything to stop us from playing as we know. We started well, played hard in defense and offense tool, closing the first half ahead by 7. From the third quarter, however, they increased their defense, and they put us in trouble. We were always close to Strasbourg, but we weren’t able to take control of the game. This defeat burns, towards the end of the game we were discharged and this isn’t good because we have to stay focused for all 40 minutes."
CAMPBELL, LOUIS
Strasbourg
"In the first half of the game we defended strongly, but we didn’t play well on offense, we could not play our basketball. At halftime, coach told us to be patient and to try to play with intelligence, so things started to go better. It was a great team victory."
