Austrian champion Swans Gmunden improved to 2-0 in Group E of the ULEB Cup Tuesday with a 85-71 victory over Benetton Fribourg Olympic at the Volksbank Arena in Gmunden, Austria. Veteran scorer Deteri Mayes led the way with 22 points as the hosts stayed pace with Triumph Lyubertsy for a share of first place in the group. The Swans host Lyubertsy next week. Meanwhile Fribourg, playing without its star from last week's double overtime victory, Harold Mrazek, dropped to 1-1. The Swiss champs host KK Buducnost in Week 3. The game was as close as could be in the early going, but Gmunden started the second half with an 11-0 run, which set the stage for the win. Matthias Mayer added 16 points and 10 rebounds, Ian Boylan scored 16 and dished 6 assists and Kevin Johnson posted 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for the Swans. Marcus Sloan led Fribourg with 17 points, Pascal Perrier-David added 14 points and 7 assists, Ken Johnson scored 14 and Dave Esterkamp had 12.

Mayes scored the first basket of the game for the hosts, before a pair of baskets from Perrier-David got Fribourg going. An intense opening period ensued, with Gmunden's Kevin Johnson and Fribourg's Ken Johnson leading their teams until a Mayes triple and then a jumper put the hosts up 24-20 after 10 minutes. Mayes added another three to start the second period for a personal 8-0 run. The lead would grow to 30-21 and soon hit double digits thanks to two Florian Schoninger three-pointers. However 4 straight points from Perrier-David and a Douglas Tshomba triple carried Fribourg to within 40-37 at halftime. Gmunden came out after the break looking for the kill, as Boylan hit one three-pointer and Mayer drilled two during an 11-0 run. The lead grew as big as 18 later in the period after back-to-back Boylan buckets and settled at 67-54 after three periods. Fribourg still had some fight left and closed the gap to single digits on a Sloan three-point play, but Mayes answered with 4 points in an 8-0 spurt that settled things as the Swans took their second win.
