Bojan Popovic - Unics KazanUnics Kazan remained undefeated in the Eurocup with a home win over Telekom Bonn on Tuesday. Unics improved to 3-0 in Group D and can close in on a spot in the Last 16 when it visits Germany to face Bonn next week. The hosts used a 12-0 first-quarter run to take control of the game early and never looked back thanks to their stingy defense, which forced 17 turnovers and limited Bonn to 1-for-12 three-point shooting. Marko Popovic shined again for the winners with 17 points and 7 assists. On a below-average shooting night (1 for 6 from downtown), Popovic drew 10 fouls and was 10 for 12 from the line. Terrell Lyday had 14 points, 3 steals and 8 fouls drawn, Kresimir Loncar tallied 14 points and 7 rebounds and Saulius Stombergas scored 12 for the winners. Chris Ensminger paced Bonn with 16 points, Bryce Taylor had 15, Patrick Flomo posted 11 points and 11 rebounds and Johannes Strasser netted 10 as Bonn dropped to 0-3.

Things started perfectly for Kazan as Popovic fed Loncar for a basket on the game’s opening possession. Ensminger was active early for Bonn, putting the visitors ahead 5-6. After a Stombergas triple, Tim Ohlbrecht knotted the game at 8-8. But things did not go well from that point as Unics soon went on a 12-0 romp in which Popovic scored 6 and assisted on a Loncar three-point play. By the time Ohlbrecht ended Bonn’s four-minute scoring drought and Alex King added 2 from the line, the hosts held a 25-14 lead after 10 minutes. Lyday drilled a three and added a fast break layup as Kazan doubled Bonn’s score, 32-16, early in the second quarter. Strasser and Flomo sparked Bonn and the result was a 0-9 run capped by Ensminger to get within 34-27. A Stombergas three soon had the hosts back up by double figures and Loncar scored on the offensive glass to make it 39-27 at halftime.

Stombergas opened the third quarter with his third three of the night, but Ensminger countered with a basket and free throws to keep Bonn’s hopes alive. The teams traded baskets for several minutes before Igor Zamanskiy broke the trend with a three-pointer that made it 49-35. Despite a poor shooting night, playmaker Jared Jordan got the ball to Flomo for a basket and then Taylor’s steal and score narrowed the gap to 50-41. The momentum shifted back to Kazan when Lyday stole the ball from Flomo, who fouled him from behind resulting in an unsportsmanlike foul. Lyday turned the play into 4 points as the hosts ended the quarter ahead 58-43. Strasser started the fourth quarter with a basket, but Lyday bettered him with a three-point play as the hosts looked to seal the win early. Strasser added another basket, but neither offense was in particularly good form and a Lyday steal that set up a Popovic slam effectively signaled the end. The closest Bonn got after that was within 12 as Unics played out the closing minutes with its reserves.

"We have won, and I’m pretty satisfied with it, although we have not done it in the best possible way. There were some mistakes in our game, though I’m glad that I gave the opportunity to practice for a number of players who are used to sitting on the bench. Popovic and Veremeenko had some injures, and I’d like to thank them for their game. They showed their sports character. We took this game seriously, conducting special preparations towards it as we knew that they are the German League leaders. I know Mr. Koch very well, we used to play against each other, and I’m very happy to see him again. This is the real power of sport, which helps people to travel and to meet good friends."

"First I’d like to congratulate my opponents for the victory. There's no doubt that the hosts have deserved it. As for us, we have missed our chances to make the game closer. My players made a number of individual mistakes thus letting Unics score a number of easy balls. The hosts were good in defense, which was really difficult to play against, and as a result we have managed to succeed a few long-range shots."
