Jerusalem snatches first win at Reggio Emilia

Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem outlasted Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia 61-63 on Wednesday at Palabigi for its first victory of the 7DAYS EuroCup season. Jerome Dyson, who led Jerusalem all night long, made a go-ahead three-pointer with 18 seconds left and iced the game with a pair of late free throws. He finished with a EuroCup career-best 22 points, while Alen Omic added 13 points and Austin Daye posted 8 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks for the winners. Amedeo Della Valle was brilliant with 23 points, 7 assists and 4 steals in defeat as Reggio Emilia slipped to 2-2. The hosts led for most of the game, but the Jerusalem defense came up big in the second half and allowed Dyson and Richard Howell to lead the comeback.

Dyson had a hand in all the visitors’ points as Jerusalem jumped to a 5-8 lead, but Della Valle was every bit his equal for the hosts. The pace slowed down with a series of turnovers at both ends, but Reggio Emilia bounced back first with back-to-back triples by Della Valle and Landing Sane for a 17-11 advantage. Garrett Nevels’s second-chance bucket extended the lead to 21-13 after 10 minutes. Dyson and Omic kept Jerusalem within striking distance, however great passing by Della Valle and great shooting by Manuchar Markoishvili kept Reggio Emilia in control. Omic scored inside to make it 30-29 only for Della Valle to respond with a three, which helped the hosts hold on for a 35-31 halftime cushion.

The stars of the first half, Della Valle and Dyson, came away with the first points of the second. Richard Howell provided power inside for the visitors and Bar Timor came off the bench and delivered a three-point play on the fast break to make it 43-41. Howell tied it at 44-44 with a three-point play in the final minute of the third quarter. After Della Valle free throws and an Austin Daye jumper, the quarter ended 46-46. Dyson gave Jerusalem its first lead since the opening minutes with a jumper, but Federico Mussini responded with a three-pointer. Neither team scored for more than three minutes until Omic tied it from the foul line. Then Dyson nailed a triple and Yogev Ohayon split free throws to make it 49-53. A three by Stratos Perperoglou stretched the margin to 5, but a minute later Markoishvili tied it at 56-56 with a three-pointer. Mussini’s three with 1:20 to go put Reggio Emilia back on top, but Dyson struck back with a go-ahead three to lead 59-61 with 18 seconds remaining. After Sane missed from downtown, Dyson iced the game from the line.

"It’s a big pity, we deserved this win. We made some mistakes and we suffered the injury of Garrett Nevels, one of the most in-shape players on our team. After this injury we reacted a lot until the plus 3 at a little bit more than one minute to the end, but then Dyson made a great shot and Hapoel won the game."

"We all understand how important his game was for us. We had a very bad start in the competition with three losses and a lot of up and downs in our games. And the worst problem we had was our defense; we were receiving almost 90 points, which is a huge number if you want to compete and win games and to be a winning team. Also we had a loss in our league with not playing very good defense last Sunday. This was the game for us to react. To react and stay alive. And to change how everybody who is playing against us is easy to score. We changed our defense. I really, really like that we insisted until the last second playing hard on defense, missing layups, missing free throws. And we know that in basketball psychology can hurt you a lot when you miss some easy baskets and have to run back and pay defense. So I hope this will be a start for us. I hope that everybody on the team understands what we have to do."

"We did not have a bad defensive game, but offensively we played a bad game, especially on shooting percentages; we missed plenty of open shots. We were ahead by 3 one minute to the end, but we did not manage to finish the game as we wanted to do. Then Dyson made a great shot, so we have to give credit to Hapoel Jerusalem."
