VEF Riga went up to 2-0 in Group G by edging difficult Kalev Cramo Tallinn 62-67 in the Estonian capital on Wednesday. Kristaps Janicenoks paced the winners with 14 points. Kenan Barjamovic posted a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Tomas Delininkaitis also had 11 points, Dee Brown got 10 while Derrick Nix pulled down 12 rebounds for VEF. Bamba Fall led Kalev with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Devin Gibson added 12 points while Frank Elegar had 10 for the hosts, which overcame an early dificit to tie the game, 23-23, early in the second quarter. Barjanovic and Brown allowed VEF to get a four-point lead, 26-30, at halftime. VEF led by as many as 33-44 midway through the third quarter but a mamooth 21-4run allowed Kalev to get a 54-48 lead early in the fourth quarter. VEF rallied and it all came down to the final minute, in which consecutive three-pointers by Barjamovic and Janicenoks sealed the outcome and helped VEF to cruise to a key road win in his intense, all-Baltic battle.
Janicenoks shined early and a layup by Antywane Robinson gave VEF a 3-9 lead. Fall and Armands Skele stepped up for Kalev but Barjamovic kept the guests ahead, 9-15. Ty Abbott brought Kalev a bit closer, 12-17, at the end of the first quarter. Fall kept pacing the hosts early in the second quarter, as Kalev improved its defense. A jumper by Skele soon tied the game at 23-23. Arturs Berzins and Barjamovic tried to change things with consecutive baskets and a three-pointer by Brown gave VEF some fresh air at 23-30. Vlad Moldoveanu struck from downtown to keep Kalev within 26-30 at halftime. Tanel Sokk struck from downtown and Fall soon made it a one-point game, 31-32. VEF found a go-to guy in Delininkaitis, who followed a triple with free throws to boost his team's lead to 32-40. A layup by Janis Berzins soon made it a double-digit game, 33-44. Kalev improved its defense late in the third quarter, as Fall and Elegar took over to bring the hosts as close as 47-48 at the end of the third quarter. Fall and Devin Gibson fueled a 7-0 run which allowed Kalev to get a six-point lead, 54-48, early in the fourth quarter. It dodn't last long, however, as Janicenoks and Barjamovic helped VEF to tie the game again, 54-54. It all came down to the final minute, as VEF led 58-59. Barjamovic nailed a critical three-pointer and Janicenoks also struck from downtown to seal the outcome, 59-65, with 37 seconds remaining.
