Bayern holds off Real

FC Bayern Munich got back to the winning ways on home floor with another fine offensive performance, holding off Real Madrid 95-86 on Wednesday night in Audi Dome. Bayern improved to 3-2 on the season, while Real lost its third consecutive game, all on the road, to drop to 2-3 on the season. Bayern never trailed in the second half, and led by Greg Monroe, Danilo Barthel and Vladimir Lucic kept the visitors mostly at bay, then used 10-3 run late in the fourth quarter to ice the game. Monroe had 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, and Barthel had 17 points and 5 rebounds for Bayern. Petteri Koponen netted 15 points, Maodo Lo had 10 points and 7 assists, while Leon Radosevic also scored 10 in a victory. Anthony Randolph paced Real with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Facundo Campatto had 16 points and 6 assists, 17-year old Usman Garuba scored 12 points in his debut, while Jordan Mickey had 10 points and 6 rebounds in defeat.

Teams traded baskets from the start. Monroe and Barthel combined to score 9 points for the hosts, but Randolph had a triple and a jumper to make it 13-13. Mickey came off the bench and scored 9 points, including a three-point play, but Bayern matched it through Barthel, DeMarcus Nelson and Radosevic, before Koponen's triple made it 22-20 after 10 minutes. Three-pointers from Paul Zipser, Koponen and Maodo Lo extended the margin to 33-23, but Real answered with a 2-10 run which included a three-pointer apiece by Jaycee Carroll and Randolph to get back within 35-33. Five points from Garuba put Real in front 37-38, but Radosevic helped the hosts take 41-38 into halftime, before Bayern scored the first 6 points of the third quarter and a fastbreak dunk from Lucic made it 46-38. Randolph scored 7 consecutive points for Real, but the hosts had four different players score and keep the margin safe. Radosevic hit a jumper to open 65-54 lead late in the third, and Bayern entered the fourth up 67-57. Rudy Fernandez knocked down a triple, but Barthel had a three-point play. After Campazzo hit a three-pointer, Barthel's corner three extended it to 77-65. Fabien Causeur scored all of the points in a 0-7 run, then Garuba scored twice inside to help get Real within 81-78, but after a timeout, Koponen got a lucky roll on a three-pointer to keep Bayern with breathing room and the visitors never came closer than 5 points the rest of the way.

Club record

Bayern really stressed going inside, attempting 51 two-point shots, and it led to setting a club record by making 32 two-pointers.

Big men do the work

The hosts got great production from their big men Greg Monroe, Danilo Barthel and Leon Radosevic, who combined to scored 45 points on 18-for 25 two-point shooting, and together they pulled down 16 rebounds.

Garuba's time has come

17-year old center Usmane Garuba made quite a EuroLeague debut. He spent 15:42 on the floor, including playing during the final stretch of the game, and he helped Real rally by scoring 7 of his 12 points in the final 5 minutes of the contest. Garuba made 5 of 6 two-point shots, grabbed 4 rebounds, had 3 steals and 1 block.

"Congratulations to the players for the win and thanks to our fans for the support. It was a very interesting game, all 40 minutes we played a good game. If you want to beat Real you need to play good basketball, and we did that tonight. Great game for us offensively, but against them, you have to keep focus all the time. We stayed together and it is a big win for us. We don't have much time for celebration, we travel tomorrow to Vitoria, which has one more day of preparation than us."
LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
"Congratulations to Bayern. Most of the time they were ahead of us. We were not able to turn the basketball game around. I think they had a lot of players in the game scoring, doing good things for the team. We played a little bit of solo basketball. We have a lot of quality on our team in our players, but this is not one-against-five basketball. They played better basketball than us and that is why they won. Give them a lot of credit for the victory. For us, I said before 'I hope this is a good lesson for the future'. We are taking too many lessons."

Players

MONROE, GREG
FC Bayern Munich
"I am happy we gave a great effort and got a win. I have been trying to get more comfortable one game at the time. My teammates have been doing a great job helping me out. I think we are all learning each other, every day we are coming to practice, every game we make sure we get better, make sure we are all on the same page, and it is turning into wins for us. As a team, we were able to get the shots we wanted, get to the spots we wanted, some of the things we knew before the game we were able to execute them. I think defensively we did a great job taking some of the stuff we knew they wanted to do coming to the game. We definitely limited their three-pointers, that is something we prepared."
CAMPAZZO, FACUNDO
Real Madrid
"It is a very tough EuroLeague and truth to be told, this is a tough loss in a difficult court. They played really well and we need to have more intensity and be more focused. We made a lot of mistakes during the game at the end, we tried to, at times, rally through our intensity. But if you want to win a game of this caliber, you have to play good basketball. We have to move on, keep practicing and start over. The EuroLeague is not easy, games require 100% from you, physically and mentally. We have to think about the next game, at home, in front of our fans, our people. We need to play better on the road and now, we have a tough test against ALBA at home. Each team that plays against Real gives 100% or even more. We have to be ready against every opponent, who will play as if every ball was the final one, as if it was in final. We have to find a balance between playing well and playing with intensity and if we do things right, good things will happen in the future."
MICKEY, JORDAN
Real Madrid
"In the EuroLeague, you have to play every minute like it is the last. We had some costly turnovers, some bad transition on defense, we have to improve on that. We are one of the teams everyone wants to beat, we are like the game of the year for them, we have to expect that and be ready to play hard. We need to play harder, play better on defense and have less turnovers, then we will be fine."
