Shved, Gill lead Khimki to fifth win

Khimki Moscow Region confirmed its great momentum in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague by rallying from a double-digit deficit to edge Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz 91-90 at home on Friday. Khimki improved to 5-1 in the standings while Baskonia dropped to 1-5. Anthony Gill and Alexey Shved led the winners with 20 points apiece. James Anderson added 18 while Stefan Markovic had 15 for Khimki. Matt Janning led Baskonia with 19 points. Another triple by Janning made Khimki call timeout at 22-30. A three-point play by Shved brought Khimki within 32-35 but Beaubois, Huertas and Janis Timma struck from downtown for a 40-48 Baskonia lead at halftime. A three-pointer by Huertas restored a 61-64 Baskonia edge after 30 minutes. Shved shined in crunch time but free throws by Janning kept Baskonia within 85-84 with 16.5 seconds left. Free throws by Shved and Gill allowed Khimki to stay out of trouble until the final buzzer.

Anderson struck from downtown and Gill followed a reverse layup with a triple to give Khimki an early 8-1 lead. Beaubois buried a three-pointer and Poirier added a couple of dunks but Charles Jenkins and Malcolm Thomas kept the hosts in charge, 12-8. Another dunk by Poirier and free throws by Rinalds Malmanis gave Baskonia its first lead, 13-14. Anderson took over with a three-point play but Voigtmann downed a jumper and Janning followed a layup with a triple for an 18-21 Baskonia lead after 10 minutes. Huertas hit a triple and Janning added two more from beyond the arc to make Khimki call timeout at 22-30. Thomas Robinson and Markovic stepped up for Khimki and a three-point play by Shved brought the hosts within 32-45. A layup by Huertas sparked a 0-7 run which Beaubois capped with a bomb from downtown to make it a double-digit game, 32-42. Huertas and Timma buried respective triples but Egor Vialtsev and Markovic kept Khimki within 40-48 at halftime.

Anderson followed a jumper with a three-point play soon after the break and Gill struck from downtown to bring Khimki within 51-53. Voigtmann and Janning nailed back-to-back triples to give Baskonia fresh air at 53-61. Markovic hit free throws and Anderson added consecutive layups in a 0-8 run that Jenkins capped with an alley-oop basket for a 61-61 tie. Huertas answered from beyond the arc for a 61-64 Baskonia lead after 30 minutes. Gill followed a backdoor layup with a triple and Shved also struck from downtown to complete Khimki's comeback, 70-69, early in the fourth quarter. Markovic joined the three-point shootout and Anderson added a layup-plus-foul for a 76-71 score. Voigtmann and Beaubois kept Baskonia within 80-78 but Shved shined with a three-point play for an 85-78 Khimki lead. Shengelia hit a three-pointer and Janning added free throws for an 85-84 Baskonia deficit with 16.5 seconds left. Shved hit four free throws in crunch time and Gill added two more to seal Khimki's win, as Granger's three-point shot was too little, too late for the guests.

Both teams return to EuroLeague action on Tuesday - Baskonia hosts Real Madrid and Khimki faces Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens in the Greek capital.

"The key was probably our defensive approach. Our first-half performance was maybe the worst this year, we played terrible in both ends, offensively and defensively. Especially defensively. We allowed almost 50 points in the first half. With this kind of performance on defense, we cannot win, especially in the EuroLeague where the level is really high.〈/p〉〈p〉I was really mad in the locker room at halftime, not about winning and losing but about the way we approached the game. In the second half, we managed to win the game by playing much much better on defense. We won and we got to be happy. Every victory in the EuroLeague counts, every victory is important, especially against Spanish teams like Baskonia, which is in good form. I have to give Baskonia congratulations for great play, but also to our team because we managed to win one very difficult game. This season is really long, and the process to become a very strong team is also very long. We need to learn from every game. We have to be happy for a few hours because we have 5-1 and are currently in first place in the Euroleague. I don’t underestimate that and I am very happy about that, but at the same time, we have to improve our game a lot."

“I think it was a tough game for both teams. Our first half was very good, with good rhythm in offense. We had very good space, passed the ball, played good defense. But at this moment we are not able to play at the same level all forty minutes. In the second half, we played worse, with more turnovers that led to Khimki’s easy baskets. It caused our confidence and slowed us down in our offense. We have to improve these and more things, especially when the game is not in the right direction for us. We have to learn to be more concentrated, pass the ball better, especially when we have problems because the other team played aggressive defense like Khimki made in the second half."

“We kept fighting. We got down early but no one gave up and we kept competing till the end. Definitely, we expected Baskonia to play tough. We expected them coming here and fight. They came here to do exactly their job because we were loose on defense, trying to get the stops. We had a slow start and have to continue to improve all”.
GILL, ANTHONY

"I think coach really got into us at halftime. We were not doing what we needed to do in the first half. He kind of yelled at us at halftime, and we kind of picked it up from there. We just didn’t come out to start the game as well as we should have. They are a great team, and we had to be ready from the start, and we weren’t. But we came out in the second half we proved we are a better team tonight. This win is great. But EuroLeague is so fast, we have a VTB coming up, and we just got to be ready to move on."
