Gist, Lekavicius lead Panathinaikos past Olympiacos

In a Greek derby full of intensity, Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens grabbed its first road win in the 2017-18 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season by edging archrivals Olympiacos Piraeus 62-70 in the Peace and Friendship Stadium on Friday. Panathinaikos improved to 4-2 in the regular season standings while Olympiacos dropped to 4-2 after registering its first road loss. James Gist led the winners with 15 points. Lukas Lekavicius added 14 while K.C. Rivers had 12 for Panathinaikos. Janis Strelnieks led Olympiacos with 18 points. Ioannis Papapetrou added 11 while Jamel McLean had 10 for the hosts. Nick Calathes, Gist and Matt Lojeski combined for all points in a 0-11 run that gave Panathinaikos an early lead, 2-11. Olympiacos improved its defense, however, while Strelnieks and Vangelis Mantzaris stepped up to put Olympiacos in charge, 17-16, after 10 minutes. Lekavicius took over early in the second quarter to boost the guests' margin to 17-25. Papapetrou and Strelnieks tried to change things for the hosts but James Singleton and Gist kept Panathinaikos ahead, 30-35, at halftime. Back-to-back triples by a red-hot Strelnieks brought Olympiacos as close as 38-40. Gist and Lekavicius stepped up in crunch time, as Panathinaikos boosted its margin to 54-66 with over 3 minutes left and never looked back.

Kostas Papanikolaou got Olympiacos going with a layup but Calathes and Gist fueled a 0-11 run that Lojeski capped with a driving basket. Brian Roberts tried to change things with a layup-plus-foul and Strelnieks had five points in a 7-0 run that brought Olympiacos within 12-13. K.C. Rivers rescued Panathinaikos with a big triple but Strelnieks hit free throws and Mantzaris added a bomb from downtown for a 17-16 Olympiacos lead after 10 minutes. A step-back jumper by Nikos Pappas sparked a 0-9 run in which Lekavicius had 4 points, including a layup in transition that restored a 17-25 Panathinaikos margin. Papapetrou hit one from beyond the arc, getting help from Strelnieks and Jamel McLean to bring Olympiacos within 25-27. Gist and Singleton buried back-to-back triples but Nikola Milutinov and Papapatrou kept Olympiacos within 30-33. A buzzer-beating dunk by Gist fixed the halftime score at 30-35.

Gist nailed another triple soon after the break, as Olympiacos went scoreless for almost 3 minutes. Milutinov rescued the hosts with a jumper and Strelnieks added consecutive three-pointers to keep his team within 38-40. Gist scored again and a wild turnaround jumper by Singleton restored a 39-44 Panathinaikos edge. McLean and Strelnieks combined for seven points in an 8-0 run that gave Olympiacos a 47-44 lead, but Kenny Gabriel took over with an outstanding put-back slam and Rivers banked in a three-pointer to put Panathinaikos back ahead, 47-49, after 30 minutes. Rivers and Gabriel stayed on fire early in the fourth quarter and free throws by Ian Vougioukas made it a seven-point game, 51-58, with over 6 minutes left. Papapetrou tried to ignite the hosts' comeback with a layup-plus-foul but Lojeski and Lekavicius combined for all points in a 0-8 run that sealed the outcome, 54-66, with over 3 minutes to go.

Both teams return to action early next week - Panathinaikos hosts Khimki Moscow Region on Tuesday while Olympiacos visits EuroLeague reigning champion Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul on Wednesday.

"I think that we didn't have a good game today. We didn't fight as we wanted, as we planned before the game. We missed a lot of loose balls defensively, which went to their hands. On the other side, our biggest problem was our offense. We were not the threat that what wanted to be and did not play the game the way we wanted. We had some open shots and some layups that we missed and I think this hurt also our confidence as the game was going on. We have some problems to finish some easy plays - easy baskets, layups and open three-point shots that could change the momentum of the game. We lost a home game - it is a tough situation because that is a game we wanted to win. We need to work hard and improve our game, to play much better from now on. The EuroLeague season has just started. It is a bad result but have to recover from it very soon."

"We are happy for this win. I think we did an excellent job tonight. First of all, we showed great mentality and played great defense all game long. On offense, more or less, we controlled what we wanted. We had some problems at the end of the first quarter and after that, some problems in the beginning of the third quarter but in general, I think we played good basketball, good defense. On offense, we played smart against an opponent which we know it is very difficult to play good offense against. It is strange for me to use less than 10 players in one game - I always use 10 players. Sometimes you have some internal problems, some injuries and things that, as you know, after one year here, you know that a Panathinaikos coach does not complain for anything. I always try to find the way to win. Every day, we will try to find players inside the team to help us because if we don't, it will be impossible to play. We played a good game in Vitoria, in general. We had the control of the game but made 3-4 incredible mistakes at the end of the game and this is why we didn't win. We played probably better than Baskonia. We always try to do this way and until now, we played two home games and four on the road - in Barcelona, Piraeus, Moscow and Vitoria. Our schedule until now has been incredible and now, we have to be ready for the next games."

"It was a tremendous atmosphere and the game was amazing. We played well, had energy and managed to win. Our defense was the key to the game, our energy. We controlled the rebounds. We hustled for every 50-50 ball and got them.""It was a tremendous atmosphere and the game was amazing. We played well, had energy and managed to win. Our defense was the key to the game, our energy.
