Second-half defense leads Promitheas to win
Promitheas Patras grabbed its second win in Group D with an 88-72 win over visiting Nanterre 92 on Wednesday. Promitheas improved to 2-2 in the standings while Nanterre dropped to 1-3 and is now on a three-game losing streak. Charis Giannopoulos led the winners with 21 points. Ian Miller added 19 and Danny Agbelese had 11 points while Vangelis Mantzaris dished 11 assists for Promitheas. Alpha Kaba led Nanterre with 20 points on 9-for-10 two-point shooting. Tyler Stone and Isaia Cordinier each added 16 points while Chris Warren scored 13 for the guests. Promitheas held the visitors to just 28 points after halftime.
Agbelese got Promitheas going with a jump hook and a dunk, then Dimitris Agravanis struck from downtown for a 7-3 lead. Warren and Miller joined the three-point shootout but Kaba dunked to keep Nanterre within 10-8. Agbelese kept pacing Promitheas with a layup-plus-free throw which Cordinier matched with a triple. Giannopoulos scored down low but Kaba had all the points, including a tomahawk slam, in an 0-8 run that put Nanterre ahead, 15-19. Nikola Radicevic and Mo Faye allowed Promitheas to tie the game, 21-21, after 10 minutes. Warren took over with a coast-to-coast layup and a three-pointer early in the second quarter, good for a 24-26 Nanterre edge. Faye scored down low and Delroy James added a layup and a dunk for the hosts, but Cordinier singlehandedly kept Nanterre ahead 31-32. Radicevic stepped up with a three-point play, fed James for a bomb from beyond the arc and scored in penetration to flip the scoreboard and make Nanterre call timeout at 39-34. Giannopoulos struck from downtown but Stone, Kaba and Cordinier brought the guests within 42-40. Agbelese and Kaba traded alley-oop slams and Damien Bouquet also dunked for a 44-44 tie. A put-back layup by Giannopoulos gave Promitheas a 46-44 edge at halftime. Agbelese and Giannopoulos scored in the paint right after the break, then Miller downed a triple to boost Promitheas's lead to 53-44 after a 9-0 run. Warren rescued Nanterre with a bomb from downtown but Miller soon made it a double-digit game, 57-47. Giannopoulos found space for a driving layup and Agravanis boosted his team's lead to 61-49. Stone and Warren brought Nanterre a bit closer, 63-56, after 30 minutes. Miller took over with an off-balance driving layup and a bomb from beyond the arc early in the fourth quarter but Cordinier and a red-hot Stone fueled a 0-7 run to give Nanterre hope at 68-61. Giannopoulos changed things for Promitheas with 8 quick points to give the hosts a solid 76-66 cushion with over 4 minutes left. Antreas Christodoulou finished a broken play with a layup and Miller sealed the outcome, 81-66, as Nanterre didn't recover.
Pivotal performer
Giannopoulos stepped up big in the fourth quarter to lead Promitheas to what could be a pivotal home win. He finished the game with 21 points by making 6 of 8 two-point shots, 2 of 5 triples and 3 of 3 free throws. He added 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 fouls drawn for a team-high PIR of 23, his a new career high.
Game-changing moment
Promitheas improved its defense at the start of the second half. Agbelese managed to block a couple of shots and send Kaba to the bench with 3 fouls. He scored in the paint and Promitheas found its regular go-to guy, Miller, who allowed the hosts to get a 57-47 margin, enough to control the game from then on.
Stellar stat
Nanterre scored 44 points on 14-of-20 two-point shots (70%) before halftime. It was limited to 3-of-17 two-point shooting (17.7%) after the break.

Mantzaris tied a club record for most assists in a EuroCup game with 11. Langston Hall previously had 11 assists against ratiopharm Ulm on October 16, 2019. Promitheas finished the game with 28 assists, one shy of its club record in the competition. It had 29 against EWE Baskets Oldenburg on March 3, 2020.
