Maciej Lampe - UNICSA week after having lost at home to the same team, Unics Kazan seized first place in Group A by blowing out host Le Mans 65-98 on the road in France on Tuesday. The result broke their first-place tie and left Unics alone at 3-1while Le Mans, 2-2, fell into a tie for second place with Banvit. Unics scorer met with no resistance all night, shooting 71% on two-pointers and 53% from the three-point arc. The visitors dished 21 assists to just 10 for Le Mans. Big man Maciej Lampe made 11 of 15 shots for 23 points for the winners. Terrell Lyday followed him with 19 points and 6 assists, Marko Popovic with 17 and 7, respectively, while Kelly McCarty had 15 points. Popovic made 4 of his team's 8 three-pointers as compared with just 1 in 9 attempts for Le Mans. Unics broke open a 15-15 game with a 7-27 run into the second quarter and never looked back en route to victory. Alex Acker scored 17 points for Le Mans, J.P. Batista and Thierry Rupert 13 each, and Alain Koffi 10.

Lampe and Lyday dueled with Acker and Batista in the opening minutes as the lead changed hands until 9-11, when Popovic's three-pointer gave Unics the lead. Rupert forced two more ties, the last at 15-15, before McCarty and Lyday filled a 0-9 run to finish the first quarter with the guest in charge at 15-24. The Unics attack kept up with three-pointers to open the second quarter by Lyday and McCarty as the difference reached 17-30. By the time Popovic joined them from the arc, twice, it was 22-42. Batista and his teammates played catch-up after that, but even with Charles Kahudi hitting what would be Le Mans' only three-pointer all game, Unics held a commanding 34-50 advantage at the half.

Popovic made his fourth and his team's seven triple soon after halftime, assuring the Le Mans fans that Unics still owned the nets. Rupert and Acker tried to respond, but now Unics went inside to Lampe, who had 9 points in a new 2-15 blast that left the scoreboard in tatters, 43-70. With the time left in the third quarter, McCarty, Lyday and Popovic scored again, the latter on the buzzer, as the difference soared to 49-76 after 3 quarters. The lead topped 30 points on a layup by Lampe early in the final quarter, at 49-80, and hit its high of 33 after a spate of late scoring by Ricky Minard before Igor Zamanskiy dunked to punctuate the Unics victory.

Head Coaches

JACKSON, JD
Le Mans
"I have no illusions, I just think that instead of 30 points we should have conceded only 15-20 points. I knew that I wasn't going to play with four or five all along to win at any cost. I know very well that we have to beat Banvit next week to advance in this competition."
PASHUTIN, EVGENY
UNICS Kazan
"After the game at home, Le Mans puts us in a thinking way and we made many corrections to our defense and to play a little bit more aggressive. We did well tonight."

Players

KAHUDI, CHARLES
Le Mans
"We were dominated in each quarter. Kazan is a very organized team and today they were very good in shooting. It is always difficult to stop a team that is so good."
POPOVIC, MARKO
UNICS Kazan
"It's great when you win a road game. When I see in the stats, the keys are 5 more rebounds and more 10 assists. The key is defense and after that we had easy points in the fast break and that's why we won the game."
