Milan’s balanced effort proved too much for Baskonia

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan controlled things for the majority of the night en route to defeating visiting Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz 88-76 at PalaBancoDesio on Tuesday night. Both teams hold 4-3 records after a game in which Milan took the lead for good with a 13-2 run to end the first quarter and immediately increased the advantage some more, as the margin never went back into single-digits for the remainder of the night. Rakim Sanders paced the hosts with 19 points, Ricky Hickman scored 13 and Krunslav Simon finished with 10. Shane Larkin shined for Baskonia with 21 points, 9 assists and 4 steals. Johannes Voigtmann scored all of his 16 points in the second half, and Andrea Bargnani added 12 points in the losing effort.

The teams traded blows early before Milan took control behind its defense. After Bargnani made a couple of shots and Kim Tillie hit a triple to put Baskonia in front 14-15 with seven minutes gone in the game, Milan finished the first quarter with a 13-2 run. The hosts attacked the basket a lot and earned a series of free throws, and Mantas Kalnietis beat the buzzer with a triple to make it 27-17 after 10 minutes. Milan increased the margin when Sanders hit a three-pointer over Bargnani to make it 36-21, as Milan allowed only one field goal in more than seven minutes. A three-point play by Milan Macvan made it 41-23 midway thru the second. Chase Budinger helped Baskonia’s defense get a few stops, and he and Bargnani cut the deficit to 10 points, but Milan hit back through Hickman and the same player made a floater at the buzzer for a 49-35 halftime lead. The margin never went back to single digits in the second half. Voigtmann made a pair of triples that got the visitors within 60-50, but two uncontested driving layups from Hickman increased it to 14 right away and forced Coach Sito Alonso to use a timeout. Awudu Abass and Sanders each added a triple that extended the margin to 72-53 late in the third, and Milan cruised from there. Larkin kept the visitors with an outside shot of a comeback, but Milan never relinquished control and comfortably closed out the game.

REPESA, JASMIN
EA7 Emporio Armani Milan
"It was a very important win because we defended better than we did during the last few games. Defensively everything begins with individual effort and ball pressure. When we execute like that, we play well. Honestly we made some mistakes because we tried too hard, but I have nothing to say about that. Defensively, this was maybe our best game this season. Maybe we should have finished the game with a larger margin, but I am satisfied."
ALONSO, SITO
Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz
"We had to play better in the first 10 minutes, especially not to give our opponent the opportunity to shoot 14 free throws. If we wanted to improve that, we previously had to play better defense, because we allowed them to pass the ball inside too easily. For referees, it is easier to call fouls if you start to play soft defense and keep doing that in one-on-one situations. After that, we tried to get over our bad moments, but they made very good shots in very important moments to kill the game."

Players

SANDERS, RAKIM
EA7 Emporio Armani Milan
"I played well, but all my teammates helped me. We played as a team and everybody can score 20 in our team, but the defense stepped up tonight. We tried to be physical because their bigs are very talented and that is my game."
