UNICS Kazan overpowers Fiat

UNICS Kazan led from tip to buzzer in routing Fiat Turin on Wednesday in Group A. The result left both teams with 3-2 records and tied for second place in their group at the midway point in the 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season. Quino Colom scored a EuroCup career-best 26 points and delivered 10 assists, while Stephane Lasme matched his career high with 24 points and collected 11 rebounds and 2 blocks for the winners. Jamar Smith netted 17 points and Anton Ponkrashov had 12 for UNICS. Lamar Patterson made 4 of 6 three-point shots for 23 points to lead Fiat. Diante Garrett collected 16 points and 8 assists, Sasha Vujacic scored 15 and Trevor Mbakwe posted 13 points and 8 rebounds in defeat.

The hosts got off to the start they wanted with Trent Lockett and Stephane Lasme converting three-point plays to make it 9-2. Vujacic nailed a three as Fiat fount its footing and the visitors came back to within 2 three times, but Lasme and Colom kept UNICS in front, 28-24, after 10 minutes. Vladislav Trushkin helped UNICS regain the momentum and Colom’s alley-oop pass to Lasme gave UNICS a double-digit lead, 41-30. Mbakwe did his best to keep Fiat close, but Colom pushed UNICS forward and the hosts cruised to a comfortable 59-45 halftime advantage.

The teams continued to trade shots at the start of the third quarter. Fiat got hot through Patterson and Vujacic to climb within 69-62. Lasme came to UNICS’s rescue with 5 straight points only to see Patterson hit back-to-back threes, which made it a 6-point game. Colom stepped up with 5 points in a 10-1 run to end the third quarter at 86-69. Ponkrashov hit some big shots in the fourth quarter to take the lead to 20. Patterson scored half the points in a 0-10 Fiat run that gave the visitors hope, but it would be too little, too late as Colom sank free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

"Unfortunately the last game we were very unlucky by missing Kaimakoglou for long. From one very unlucky moment from his effort to dive and save one ball he had one very unlucky injury. I have to say that we were not serious at the end. I want to be honest and true. I was not so satisfied because in the last part of the game we were not serious. We should have won by a bigger difference. We must demand this from ourselves at our home. Unfortunately we finished with just 8 points… The conclusion from this game is that the players sacrificed themselves, they fought for the missing players, we won. This is very important. On the other hand, we were not serious at the end. We should have won by more points. "
BANCHI, LUCA
Fiat Turin
"I have to congratulate UNICS Kazan because they played a very good game, especially in the first half, it looked perfect. The way they approached the game as we were supposed to, because they lost their last two games and they had a very urgent need to win this game and for us we were supposed to be ready and compete from the beginning. This is the reason why I am so sad and so upset. We didn’t approach the game in the right way. Very passive. We allowed 59 points before halftime and this is not the way to compete at this level. "

OKEKE, DAVID
Fiat Turin
"We didn't play this game as we had to. Maybe we were a bit tired, but we didn't have the right approach to the game and when you play against teams such as Kazan, you cannot start a game this way and hope to win easily. Now we must set aside this loss, learn from it and think about our next games."
WASHINGTON, DERON
Fiat Turin
"Today's game was very tough. The other team came out and played strong for 40 minutes, we played pretty good except for the defense for 35 minutes, so we just couldn’t get everything going at the crucial point. It was one of those kinds of games where we just have to learn from and get better from in order to be ready for the next games. I think we have the talent, the players and the coach to play in this competition, but we always have to be focused. All the games are important and we must be ready for all of them and take one game at a time."
