Raul Lopez and Axel Hervelle - Bilbao Basket - EC13 (photo Bilbao Basket)Bilbao Basket used a huge run at the end of the third and start of the fourth quarter en route to 98-71 win over the visiting Belgacom Spirou Charleroi on Tuesday night. Bilbao improves to 3-0 in Group B, while the visitors remain winless, in the last place, after three games. Spirou closed within 53-47 midway through the third quarter, but German Gabriel and Fran Pilepic sparked a spurt, and Dairis Bertans finished it with triples that had the hosts in front 72-52 after three quarters, and up by 30 points in the fourth. Among six double-digit scorers for Bilbao, Axel Hervelle scored 17 points, Pilepic netted 15 in less than 20 minutes, while Dairis Bertans and Gabriel each finished with 11. Devin Green scored 20 points for the visitors, and Demond Mallet scored 12 in defeat.

Darryl Watkins and Green combined 10 points to get the visitors going, and a triple from Mallet made it 4-13 after less than 4 minutes. Mallet and Jorn Steinbach hit more three-pointers for the visitors, but Raul Lopez hit a jumper and a triple for Bilbao, and Zoran Vrkic hit from downtown as the hosts cut it to 18-21 after 10 minutes. Mohamed Abukar kept Spirou ahead at the start of the second quarter, but back-to-back three-pointers from Alex Mumbru put Bilbao in the lead 30-29. After that, teams traded leads, as Wen Boss Mukubu scored from long range for the visitors, but Gabriel hit one for Bilbao, as the hosts held 39-38 at halftime. With Mumbru and Hervelle leading Bilbao, the visitors held on behind Green until the midway point of the third quarter and 53-47. That is when Gabriel and Pilepic with a triple started big Bilbao run, and with Vrkic and Roger Grimau each adding a basket-plus-foul, margin grew. Bertans finished the third quarter with a three-pointer for 72-52, and hit two more from downtown at the start of the fourth as lead reached 84-57. Margin was as big as 30 points, as Bilbao cruised in the closing minutes.

"It's easy to say this was a tale of two halves, because the point differences were great in one but not the other. But I think that in games you have to get better. In the first 20 minutes, our opponents played well, came prepared and made it difficult on us with defensive changes. We couldn't make our open shots and we needed to make some shots to get a lead. We came back from 8 or 9 behind to lead at halftime by a point, then came back very concentrated and intense for the second half and scored 59 more points. We were able to control the rest of the game and all 12 of our players scored, which is a nice fact."

"You won't be surprised if I say that Bilbao deserved to win. I think we did a really good first half. We had one goal tonight, to control absolutely the tempo. And you could see in the second half, when we started to rush our offense, we forgot to rebound, forgot to play weak-side defensive situations and immediately we got in trouble against this type of team. The conclusion is that there were 20 really good minutes for us. We got a very good team in trouble. And in the second half we forgot to play, and if we want to be competitive with a team like that, we have to be consistent for 40 minutes."
