Efes outhustles Panathinaikos in home win

Anadolu Efes Istanbul survived a big showdown between Turkish Airlines EuroLeague powerhouses by topping Panathinaikos OPAP Athens 78-62 at home on Friday. Efes improved to 5-2 in the standings while Panathinaikos dropped to 4-3. Rodrigue Beaubois led the winners with 19 points. Adrien Moerman added 17, Bryant Dunston had 14, Vasilije Micic got 11 and Krunoslav Simon 10 for Efes. Nick Calathes and DeShaun Thomas led Panathinaikos with 11 points apiece while James Gist added 10.

Three-pointers by Moerman and Micic gave Efes an early 6-1 lead. Dunston followed a dunk with a layup to boost the hosts' lead to 12-3. Matt Lojeski and Calathes stepped up for Panathinaikos but an unstoppable Moerman kept Efes way ahead, 19-11, after 10 minutes. Ioannis Papapetrou and Thomas tried to change things for Panathinaikos early in the second quarter but a reverse layup by Simon and a three-pointer by Brock Motum made it a double-digit game, 30-18. Thomas and Nikos Pappas briefly rescued the guests with respective three-point plays but Beaubois kept pacing Efes and Simon struck from downtown to make Panathinaikos stop the game at 40-24. Tibor Pleiss followed foul shots with an alley-oop slam to keep a 16-point Efes lead, 44-28, at halftime. Thanasis Antetokounmpo scored twice around the basket to force an Efes timeout at 44-32, soon after the break. Calathes and Antetokounmpo each hit a triple and a layup by Gist gave Panathinaikos hope at 52-42. Moerman rescued Efes with a jumper and free throws, and a dunk by Micic restored a 60-46 lead after 30 minutes. Nothing changed in a low-scoring fourth quarter, as even when a free throw by Thomas got Panathinaikos within 64-54, Efes kept full control of the game in the final 3 minutes. An 8-0 run that Beaubois capped with a stop-and-pop triple allowed fans to celebrate a big home win.

Pivotal performer

Micic was all over the place against Panathinaikos, leading Efes with an all-around performance of 11 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 fouls drawn for a PIR of 15. With Shane Larkin sidelined, Micic played over 32 minutes and made the most out of that.

Game-changing moment

Panathinaikos got a bit of rhythm in the second quarter, 32-24, but Beaubois and Simon fueled an 8-0 run that put Efes out of reach at 40-24. Panathinaikos did not get within 8 points again.

Stellar stat

Efes hit 13-of-17 two-point shots in the first half (76.5%), outrebounding Panathinaikos by 21-14 and pulling down 18 in the defensive end. That translated into a 44-28 halftime lead, which gave Efes full control of the game for good.

Did you notice?

Dunston had 2 blocks and now ties with Ioannis Bourousis for second place in the all-time standings with 194. Bourousis needed 284 games to get 194 blocks but Dunston did it in 154. Fran Vazquez leads the all-time block standings with 249.

Next game:

Both teams return to Turkish Airlines EuroLeague earlier than usual next week. Efes hosts Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv on Tuesday, November 20 at 18:00 CET. A day later, on Wednesday, November 21, Panathinaikos and coach Xavi Pascual welcome his former team, FC Barcelona Lassa, at 20:00 CET.

"During the game, we played hustle basketball like we played in the first six games, very aggressive. And tonight, we also played great basketball on offense. We moved the ball well. We played very good defense, starting from the first minutes until the last ones. We didn't give them easy baskets and closed the paint. The guys put out great hustle and finally, Anadolu Efes had its supporters, 7,000 or 8,000. We had a great victory, but of course, this is the EuroLeague and we have one more game on Tuesday against Maccabi. We need the same atmosphere, the same aggressiveness and the same basketball – and we need to win again. This game is over and we will think about Tuesday, at home one more game. The guys put in excellent hustle. Our strategy was to not give them space, to attack on the pick-and-roll, to trap aggressively Lojeski, Langford, Lekavicius, and to stay under the picks with Calathes. We made good defense, of course, and everything is for the guys, who put in great hustle and came here tonight to win the game. I spoke with them this morning about being mentally ready, because Panathinaikos is a great team but tonight, we were mentally stronger than them."
PASCUAL, XAVI
Panathinaikos OPAP Athens
"I think the picture of the game is very clear. We did everything wrong in the first 20 minutes. We didn't play defense and played very bad on offense. We didn't respect our rules on defensive rebounds and didn't play transition defense at the level that we have to do it. In the second 20 minutes, especially the first 17, we changed the picture and played better defense. Actually, we also played better on offense but every time we found an open shot, and we found a lot of them, we didn't hit three-point shots to come back into the game, especially in the last part of the third quarter and the beginning of the last quarter. We shot at least 5 or 6 three-point shots completely alone and didn't score. This is why we couldn't change the game, or at least we couldn't find the way to have chances to win. I think that, in general, Efes was the better team and this is why they won. We only played good defense for 17 minutes."

"It was a great team performance. We all played good, we all played together and it is a great win. It is always nice (to have 4 blocks). I have long arms and I try to use them! It is very good but as long as we have the win, I am happy, for sure."
DUNSTON, BRYANT
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"It is tough playing against Panathinaikos, all the time. I think we were focused today and played really good defense, and kind of got them messed up on the offensive end. It is a great accomplishment [tying for second place in all-time blocks] but it is not really my focus. I am trying to help the team play defense and even if I don't get the block, I scare the offense enough to make the shot, so I think I did a good job today with that."
THOMAS, DESHAUN
Panathinaikos OPAP Athens
"Especially when we play on the road, we have a problem with the defense. We make mistakes and we do not protect the ball. We lack confidence when playing on the road. The problem with the long-distance shooting is occasional. We have no confidence in the shots in the last few seconds and this has to be changed gradually."
