Logan leads Rytas to first win in Group B

Two-time EuroCup champion Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius registered its first win in Group B by downing Baloncesto Fuenlabrada 101-84 in the Lithuanian capital on Wednesday. Rytas improved to 1-3, while Fuenlabrada dropped to 2-2. David Logan led the winners with 27 points and 9 assists. Arturas Gudaitis added 17 points and 11 rebounds, Rokas Giedraitis scored 16 points, Rashaun Broadus 11 and Drew Gordon pulled down 13 rebounds for Rytas. Xavi Rey led Fuenlabrada with 15 points. Marko Popovic scored 13 and tied with Chuck Davis for second place on the EuroCup all-time scoring list with1,147 points. Moussa Diagne added 10 points for the guests. Rytas outrebounded Fuenlabrada 23-10 in the first half, dished 9 assists and committed just 2 turnovers to get a 20-point lead, 63-43, at the break. Rytas downed 13-of-28 three-point shots and ended up outrebounding Fuenlabrada 45-20, in what was the biggest key to the game.

A three-pointer by Popovic gave Fuenlabrada an early lead, 6-7. Logan followed a layup-plus-foul with a triple, but Popovic and Diagne helped the guests tie the game again, 16-16. Rytas found a go-to guy in Broadus, who joined forces with Giedraitis to give Rytas a 30-16 margin at the end of the first quarter. A layup by Arturas Gudaitis capped a 16-0 run early in the second quarter. Rolands Smits and Pako Cruz buried back-to-back triples to give Fuenlabrada hope at 34-24. Corey Fisher and Deividas Gailius joined the three-point shootout to keep Rytas way ahead, 43-29. Logan kept pacing Rytas, as he sank a bomb from downtown and fed Adam Lapeta for a jumper. A buzzer-beating basket by Gailius broke the game open, 63-43, at halftime. Fuenlabrada tried to speed up the game tempo after the break, but Rytas kept dominating the boards and a dunk by Lapeta made it a 25-point game. Fuenlabrada improved its defense and a corner triple by Alex Llorca brought the guests a bit closer, 78-59. Giedraitis helped Rytas set an 86-63 lead after 30 minutes. Nothing changed in the fourth quarter, as Rytas kept a safe lead until the final buzzer.

Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius
“I was satisfied to see my players concentration and how they dealt with the pressure. Our opponents are playing fast basketball with huge energy, using great rotation and making a lot of shots, so it demanded from us a huge defensive efforts. The first two quarters were excellent, just in the last quarter we let up too many easy points. But we finally achieved our first victory and I hope to keep our momentum.”
CUSPINERA, JOTA
Montakit Fuenlabrada
“Before the game we knew that Lietuvos Rytas was winless, but also we knew that all three games they lost away from home and it was going to be different in Vilnius. Lietuvos Rytas have five or six excellent offensive players, which concentrate most on the points and tonight we couldn’t stop them. In two and a half minutes, they outscored us 14-0. The game ended there, there was no comeback. The only thing I asked my players during the half time was to keep fighting and that’s what we did. We were 30 points down, struggling in the defense, then changed some systems and managed to come back a little.”
