DKV Joventut stormed its way into the Eurocup Last 16 in Group D by thrashing Besiktas Cola Turka 108-92 in Badalona on Tuesday. Joventut improved to 3-1 and already qualified to the next round along with Unics Kazan, first with a 4-0 record. Besiktas dropped to 1-3 and is mathematically out of the competition, just as Telekom Baskets Bonn, fourth at 0-4. Uros Tripkovic led 8 Joventut players in double digits with 20 points on 6-of-7 three-pointers. Antonio Bueno added 13, Pere Tomas had 12, Luka Bogdanovic and Clay Tucker each got 11 while Edu Hernandez-Sonseca, Kristaps Valters and Alain Koffi contributed 10 apiece for Joventut, that fired in 16-of-29 shots from downtown. Engin Atsur and Kevin Fletcher led Besiktas with 21 points apiece. Mire Chatman added 20 while Cevher Ozer had 19 for the guests. Joventut led 27-19 after 10 minutes and boosted its margin to 57-41 at halftime. Besiktas only managed to trade baskets early in the third quarter and a rain of three-pointers allowed Joventut to control the game and cruise to a well-deserved win.
Bueno scored in the paint and Tucker struck twice from downtown to give Joventut an early 8-2 lead. Lonny Baxter scored inside and Atsur scored in penetration but a put-back dunk by Koffi and an easy basket by Bueno gave Joventut a 12-6 lead. Ozer sank free throws and Kerem Ozcan added a put-back layup but Mario Fernandez followed a layup off a steal with free throws to keep Joventut out of trouble at 16-10. Hernandez-Sonseca dunked it and Tomas added a driving layup for a 20-12 Joventut margin. Valters and Tomas made free throws and Tripkovic added a corner triple to make Joventut keep a 27-19 margin after 10 minutes. Valters took over with a layup-plus-foul and Tomas downed a three-pointer to boost the hosts' lead to 33-20. Fletcher shined with a three-point play and a triple but Bogdanovic struck from downtown and Hernandez-Sonseca sank foul shots for a 38-26 score. Hernandez-Sonseca and Bogdanovic kept pacing Joventut and a triple by Tripkovic broke the game open, 46-31. Chatman returned to the floor but could not changed things, as Besiktas only managed to trade baskets now. Bueno followed free throws with a four-meter jumper to give Joventut a safe lead, 57-41, at halftime.
Tomas shined with a driving layup immediately after the break and Tucker beat the shot clock with a big basket in penetration for a 61-42 score. Baxter sank free throws but Tucker fed Hernandez-Sonseca for consecutive baskets, good for a 63-44 Joventut lead. Henk Norel rolled off a pick to dunk it, as Joventut dominated the game now. Ozer tried to change things with a three-point play that Tucker erased with a bomb from downtown. Baxter took over with a layup-plus-foul and Atsur buried an open triple to give Besiktas some hope at 72-57. Tomas got the crowd involved with a three-pointer, igniting an 8-0 run that Bogdanovic capped another shot from downtown for a 80-57 score. Chatman and Atsur got Besiktas within 86-64 after 30 minutes. Tripkovic downed a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter but Chatman followed an acrobatic layup with a basket-and-foul for a 89-71 Besiktas deficit. He didn't find much help around, as Besiktas only rallied once the outcome was clear. Back-to-back triples by Tripkovic and a layup by Koffi allowed Joventut the 100-point barrier, 101-82. All Joventut fans had the chance to celebrate that their team will keep fighting for Eurocup glory after a big shooting exhibition.
