Kalin Lucas - Banvit BK Bandirma - EC12 (photo Valencia Basket)When it looked like it was a done deal, three straight triples out of the blue by Kalin Lucas in the last period, put BK Banvit Bandirma in the game again and, after surviving overtime, the Turkish team finally defeated BC Azovmash Mariupol in Ukraine by 88-95 on Wednesday. The first half was close for both teams but Azovmash built significant leads throughout the third period until Lucas put his team ahead. In the final play of regulation, Lynn Greer missed the shot that would have given the win to the hosts with 82-82 on the scoreboard. In the extra session, the cold head of Chuck Davis gave Banvit a much needed win. This result allows Banvit to improve to a 3-1 in Group D, while BC Azovmash says goodbye to the Eurocup as it remained winless with a 0-4 with only two weeks to go. David led the winners with 22 points, Lucas added 20 and Vladimir Stimac had 20 more plus 10 rebounds. Sammy Mejia contributed 15 for Banvit and Kenan Bajramovic posted 14. For Azovmash, Greer had 28 points and 10 assists - for a 40 index rating performance - while Simonas Serapinas added 15, Miroslav Raduljica 14 and Tadija Dragicevic 11.

Despite Vladimir Stimac's starting 0-2 for BK Banvit, the hosts reacted and soon were leading 6-2 after Oleksandr Kolchenko's bucket. Azovmash kept on a steady pace in offense and started increasing the lead point by point up to a 17-9 after Lynn Greer's dunk, but at that point Banvit regrouped and made it 17-15 after Chuck Davis' basket, 17-15. In the final plays of the quarter, four straight points by Sammy Mejia allowed Banvit to tie the game at 19-19 after 10 minutes. In the first plays of the second quarter neither team managed to jump ahead. Both sides were struggling from the arc at this point, but at least Greer got a foul out of an attempt to hit the three free throws that came with it for 30-28. Kalin Lucas replied now with a three for the guests and, funnily enough, Greer did now the same thing to get the score going and Tadija Dragicevic soon joined him to make it 38-31 for Azovmash. Vladimir Stimac pushed hard in the last minutes of the period to get Banvit a little closer, 40-37, with four straight points, but Dragicevic had another three as reply. Mejia would squeeze in a last bucket before the break leaving everything open after 20 minutes, 43-39.

In the first plays of the second period, both teams managed to stay close to each other thanks to tough defense. Greer was still the main referent in offense for Azovmash with four straight points, making it 16 for him, that made it 47-43. The cushion remained the same during the following minutes as points came by scarce on both sides, and each team replied to each other. When Simonas Serapinas hit a three in the last minute of the third period, it looked like Azovmash was in control, 63-56 after 30 minutes. In the first plays of the last period both teams were at each other's throats and each point was replied by another on the other side, so Azovmash managed to keep a solid 7-point lead, 71-64, with seven minutes to go. Chuck Davis stepped up with a three for Banvit that made it a 4-point game, but it was only the guests' 4th of 24 attempts. Luckily for them, the rebounding battle was 25-35 and that kept them alive. On the other hand, Azovmash was finding its rhythm in offense boosting its assists number to 21 at this point, and Raduljica and Dragicevic hit back-to-back baskets for the hosts to make it 75-67. But when it looked like a done deal for Azovmash, Kalin Lucas exploded with three bombs from downtown that went unanswered and he single-handedly put Banvit ahead, 75-76, with three minutes to go. That situation triggered a basket exchange scenario as the clock ticked away. Kenan Bajramovic made it a brand new game at 80-80 when the last minute started. Lucas scored two more free throws for 80-82 and his 13th point in the period, and Azovmash called a timeout. Greer score right off the bat, 82-82. Raduljica blocked Bajramovic's shot for the hosts and then, Greer missed the last attempt to send the game into overtime.

Keith Simmons had his first points of the game for Banvit in the extra session and then free throws were exchanged as the guests dominated, 84-86, after two minutes. Davis' slam followed by Bajramovic's three put Azovmash against the wall all of a sudden, 86-91 with two minutes to go. Greer missed for the hosts and after a couple more plays, Azovmash was forced to call another timeout with 33 seconds to go. Oleksiy Pecherov missed a three and then Davis went to the line to score both attempts for 86-93, sealing the deal for Banvit.

Head Coaches

Azovmash Mariupol
"It was hard to coach the game, because I had less than one day for preparation. I took a chance with some new schemes. It was hard to search for the proper schemes in offense and defense. But our problem was in rebounding. We will not win games with such rebounding. We played without Harris because he started to play too early after the surgery and now he has some problems with his knee. It is good that our fans had so much emotion in this game. We fought, but not enough. We will practice and solve problems."
ENE, ORHUN
Banvit Bandirma
"First of all, I want to say that this was an ordinary game for us. We learned just on the eve of the game that Azovmash decided to change the coaching staff. I know that in such a situation, the team can play either very good or very bad. Tonight Azovmash was great. Especially, Lynn Greer was the key player; he took responsibility to lead the team and he scored 28 points. But we knew that we have more than one player who can take responsibility to drive the game. We stopped him for couple of minutes and did all that was necessary for the win. It is always hard to win on the raod. But we are happy that we won this game, especially against Azovmash."

ZABIRCHENKO, DMYTRO
Azovmash Mariupol
"We lost the game because we couldn't control the rebounds. The new coach came and he tried to introduce some new schemes to the game. I'm sure that we will play better. With the change of coach, some react positive, some negative, and the atmosphere is changing as well. "
DAVIS, CHUCK
Banvit Bandirma
"It is always tough to play on the road. We started the game relaxed, and I can't explain why. It is difficult to play against great players like Lynn Greer. However, if Greer plays so great, but we won, it means that we did our job very well. We made crucial shots and luck was on our side. Though, both teams played great tonight."
