Kalise Gran Canaria rejoined the right to reach Last 16 in difficult Group E by edging Asvel Basket 69-81 in Lyon, France on Tuesday night. All four teams - Gran Canaria, Asvel, Lietuvos Rytas and Azovmash - are tied at 2-2 with two games remaining in the Eurocup regular season. Marcus Norris led the winners with 19 points. Carl English added 12, Melvin Sanders had 11, Joel Freeland got 10 while Sitapha Savane pulled down 11 rebounds for Gran Canaria. Amara Sy led Asvel with 21 points. Ben Dewar added 13 while Ali Traore had 11 for the hosts. Laurent Foirest and Traore shined early to give Asvel a 19-15 edge after 10 minutes. Norris managed to put Gran Canaria back ahead, 32-22, but Dewar allowed Asvel to regain a 36-35 edge at the break. Jim Moran, Sanders and English struck from downtown in the third quarter to restore a 55-59 Gran Canaria margin after 30 minutes. Dewar and J.R. Reynolds got Asvel as close as 67-69 with 4 minutes to go, but three-pointers by Sanders and English sealed the outcome down the stretch.
Moran got Gran Canaria going with a three-pointer but back-to-back layups by Foirest and Eric Campbell gave Asvel a 4-3 edge. The guests found a go-to guy in Savane, who scored twice around the basket but Traore restored a 8-7 Asvel lead. Norris struck from downtown and Freeland made a free throw but a three-pointer by Foirest tied it at 11-11. Mario Fernandez and Josh Fisher hit foul shots but an outstanding Foirest and consecutive baskets by Sy kept the hosts ahead, 19-15, after 10 minutes. Traore scored inside right at the start of the second quarter but Freeland bettered that with a three-point play for a 21-18 Gran Canaria deficit. Sy answered from downtown while Ben Dewar added consecutive baskets to keep Asvel ahead at 30-24. Sanders struck from downtown which Norris added 5 points in a 2-9 run that gave Gran Canaria a 32-33 edge. Dewar followed free throws with a layup to restore a 36-35 Asvel margin at halftime.
Traore scored after the break and then followed Campbell's dunk with another easy basket for a 42-37 Asvel lead. Moran nailed a three-pointer, igniting a 0-8 run in which Fisher also struck from downtown for a 42-45 Gran Canaria lead. Sy tied the game with a triple but Fisher copied him immediately after that. Dewar and Sy stepped up for Asvel but Moran nailed one beyond the arc, good for a 49-51 Gran Canaria edge. Sy shined with back-to-back layups but Sanders and English answered from downtown for a 53-57 score. Freeland and an unstoppable Sy fixed the score at 55-59 after 30 minutes. English opened the fourth quarter with consecutive layups to make it an eight-point game, 55-63. Reynolds stepped up with a three-point play but Fernandez and Freeland kept Gran Canaria ahead, 59-67. Three-pointers by Reynolds and Dewar brought Asvel back to life, 67-69, with 4 minutes to go. Sanders and English silenced the crowd with repective triples while a layup by James Augustine sealed the outcome, 69-77, as Asvel never recovered.
