CAI Zaragoza defeated Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia 93-79 on Tuesday in a game that featured several wild runs. CAI dominated early, holding the visitors to 6 first-quarter points and reeling off 24 unanswered points to lead by 26 early in the second quarter. The outcome seemed certain, but Reggio Emilia did not quit, closed the deficit in the third quarter and came within 66-64 in the fourth. Jason Robinson hit a clutch three that helped restart the hosts’ attack as CAI pulled away again to chalk up the win. CAI improved to 2-2 in Group A, while dropping Reggio Emilia to 1-3. Rasko Katic paced the winenrs with 18 points and 9 rebounds and Stevan Jelovac posted 17 points and 7 boards as CAI outrebounded Reggio Emilia 33-21. Chris Goulding and Robinson netted 15 points apiece and Marcus Landry had 13 for the winners. Andrea Cinciarini paced Reggio Emilia with 17 points and 5 assists and Achille Polonara added 16 points in the loss.

Riccardo Cervi’s steal and layup and Cinciarini gave Reggio Emilia a promising 2-4 start. Even as the hosts started to roll, Donell Taylor made it 8-6. However the visitors would not be heard from again in the first quarter. Joan Sastre free throws started a run of 22 unanswered points to finish the quarter – plus another basket to open the second. Katic scored 6 points and Goulding nailed back-to-back threes to end the quarter at 30-6. Polonara’s steal and layup ended the Reggio Emilia drought. Federico Mussini sank a three-pointer and Polonara followed to make it 34-16. Threes from Goulding and Landry showed that CAI was not going to let its big lead dwindle. Despite Polonara’s hard work inside and a Ksistof Lavrinovic three, Robinson and Katic answered with points. Taylor helped trim the deficit to 48-29 at the break.

Katic scored twice early in the second half, but Polonara stayed strong for Reggio Emilia with a triple. Cinciarini fed Lavrinovic underneath and sank a triple of his own to bring his team within 56-41. Kevin Lisch’s steal and layup kept CAI cruising despite a second three from Cinciarini. Reggio Emilia closed to within 13 after a Second Lavrinovic three and a Polonara basket on the offensive glass. After free throws by Katic and Cinciarini, the third quarter concluded at 64-51. Amedeo Della Valle free throws ignited a 0-10 run to open the fourth quarter. Della Valle added a three and Polonara capped the run to make it a 3-point game. Robinson ended the CAI drought, but Adam Pechacek countered with a triple to silence the crowd at 66-64. Robinson knocked down a three and Landry converted a three-point play as the hosts rebuilt a double-digit lead. Mussini hit from downtown for Reggio Emilia, but Robinson soon had CAI up by 12 and the visitors never again threatened.

Head Coaches

RUIZ, JOAQUIN
CAI Zaragoza
"We are very happy because we won at home and that is very important in the Eurocup. We played very well in the first half and less so in the second half. But the most important thing is that in the end we won by 14 points. "
MENETTI, MASSIMILIANO
Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia
"It was two different games. The first game was the first quarter. That was the game that decided the final result. We played softer and without confidence. Zaragoza had the rhythm and scored with confidence. The second part of the game, especially the second and third quarter, was when we dominated completely. This is true because we came back 20 points. But the difference from the first quarter was too much. The difference as that we used all our energy to come back in the game. Zaragoza with its talent did not permit us to come back in the final minutes. "

Players

ROBINSON, JASON
CAI Zaragoza
"The first quarter was incredible. We made a big difference with our defense. We tried to take advantage of it; every time we had a good defense, we had an opportunity to score easy baskets. Our defense really carried us in the first quarter. You have times where you are playing at a really high level and times where you lose you focus a little bit. We were able to recover our focus and come away with a victory."
POLONARA, ACHILLE
Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia
"We started the game badly and finished the first quarter 30-6. After that we tried to come back, but it was not easy because Zaragoza is a good team. We started too badly to be in the game. "
