Dario Saric - KK Zagreb CO, 2011 Rome NIJTKK Zagreb CO's journey to protect its Nike International Junior Tournament title started with a 64-57 victory over Dnipro in its opening game at the Citta di Roma tournament in Rome, Italy on Tuesday afternoon. Zagreb took a 1-0 record in Group B to tie up with the hosting team Stella Azzurra while Dnipro fell to 0-1 to share the third spot with Gran Canaria 2014. Dario Saric led the winners with 27 points and 14 rebounds, Dominik Mavra added 15 and Marko Milekic finished with 14. Dnipro saw Vladyslav Smyrnov collecting 22 points and 9 boards while Volodymyr Shevchenko contributed 18 points. Dnipro was on top in the first quarter and a three pointer by Shevchenko set the score on 21-17 at the end of the first ten minutes, Saric and Mavra took over and kept Dnipro on nine points until the half time break to take a 33-30 gap after 20 minutes of basketball but the close run was still on. Mavra's hit from the arc gave Zagreb a 46-43 entering the closing quarterand a steal by Saric led to another long range hit, this time by Milekic that wrote a 57-49 gap in favor of his team yet still with 7 minutes to play. Smyrnov scored at the other end but from that point both sides lost the rhythm and combined only 13 points, but enough for Zagreb to secure the win. Tomorrow Zagreb will face Gran Canaria while Stella Azzurra take on Dnipro.
