Climamio Bologna its first win of the season 72-74 against Efes Pilsen

Climamio Bologna came back in style on Wednesday to record its first win of the season 72-74 against Efes Pilsen at the Abdi Ipekci gym in Istanbul, Turkey. A 1-16 run in the last period allowed the visitors to jump ahead for good after trailing for most of the game. On the last play, Edney scored a free throw to put Climamio up 2 and then Horace Jenkins turned the ball over in the final seconds when he had a chance to force overtime. David Bluthenthal led the winners with 18 points, while Marco Belinelli and Stefano Mancinelli added 12 apiece to for Bologna. For Efes, which led 64-52 early in the fourth quarter, Drew Nicholas posted 23 points on 7-of-11 three-point shooting, while Cuneyt Erden and Marcus Haislip had 15 each. The win allows Climamio to go 1-5 in Group A while Efes drops to 3-3.

James Thomas started the game with 4 points for Climamio, but Nicholas replied with two threes for an 8-4 Efes edge. Erden had a three-point play of his own, while drawing Preston Shumpert's third foul in 3 minutes. Bluthenthal broke Efes's 8-0 run with a jumper and Belinelli fired in Climamio's first three to make it 11-9. The visitors' defense started to force Efes turnovers and Bluthenthal used that to put Climamio ahead with a triple to complete Climamio's own 0-8 run. Niksa Prkacin and Nicholas put Efes back on top. Nicholas rifled in a third triple, but Belinelli replied in the same way. Cenk Akyol put an end to the first period with free throws to make it 22-20, with 8 baskets having come from beyond the arc.

Efes's defense started to work harder at the start of the second quarter, but Bluthenthal was still efficient on offense. But it was Steffen Hamann who found a hole in the Efes paint to drive and tie it at 26-26. Hamann and then Vasco Evtimov scored to put Climamio ahead by 4 points, but Kerem Gonlum put back an offensive rebound and Erden added a triple to tie it again at 32-32. Efes looked inside on offense, but the defense of the visitors, combined with another Bluthenthal triple, forced an Efes timeout as the scoreboard showed 34-36. Nicholas appeared again for his fourth triple of the night to close the scoring at halftime with the scoreboard showing 37-36 for Efes Pilsen.

The second half opened with an Akyol triple and then Prkacin fed Haislip for a dunk that made it 42-36. Akyol was on fire, and Nicholas joined him with yet another triple for to give Efes its first double-digit lead, 47-36. Bluthenthal hit a turnaround jumper to get Climamio going, and Edney soon added an open jumper to make it 47-40. The game was following the trend of the first minutes as the Climamio run went up to 0-6 with Edney scoring again. Then it was Efes's turn, as the hosts went on a 7-0 run that included an Erden triple. Haislip became a solid option for Efes in the paint, but Bluthenthal remained lethal for Climamio as he nailed another triple. The last two minutes of the third quarter saw both teams struggling on offense. Bluthenthal posted a free throw for a 59-48 Efes edge after 30 minutes.

Belinelli opened the last period with free throws, but Haislip's stylish slam got Efes going. Thomas copied him for Climamio and then Nicholas and Belinelli traded triples to make it 64-55. Hamann reappeared for a triple, but Efes resisted. However after Prkacin added a free throw, Mancinelli's triple, Bluthenthal's jumper and two Belinelli free throws carried the visitors back and tied the game at 65-65. Shupert drilled a triple that stretched the run to a 1-16 and put Climamio up 65-68. After an Efes timeout, Erden found the space for a triple and then he added two free throws to make it 70-69 with a minute to play. On the next play, Mancinelli blasted a lethal three and with 25 seconds to go, Erden missed his attempt. Belinelli went to the line after being fouled, but scored only one and Jenkins drove quickly for a layup, 72-73 and 10 seconds to go. On the last play, Edney was fouled and went to the line. He missed the first shot, but scored the second. With a 72-74, Jenkins took the ball and drove fast again, but this time he turned the ball over allowing Climamio to take its first win of the season.

"There's nothing much to say about the game. To play the last five minutes of the game expecting and wishing to see the end in the Euroleague, when you were leading by 12 points, and if you go down by three points all of a sudden, of course you lose it. Trying to control the game by stopping, losing the balls one after another, it's really unbelievable. You cannot handle those mistakes at a Euroleague level. We can never say that we can learn lesson of this loss. Because we are Efes Pilsen and it's not correct to take this loss as a lesson. Unfortunately we played that way. Nothing more to say but congratulations for Climamio Bologna."
ATAMAN, ERGIN

"It's a very valuable win for us tonight. We came here winless and won against a very strong opponent, which beat Olympiacos last week by 18 points. We played very clever tonight. We also challanged well. We had some doubts before the game. David Bluthenthal came to Istanbul just a couple of hours before the game because he stayed at home because of sickness. I think this win will open the way for us in the Euroleague. Before I landed in Bologna, everybody was saying that the team was not doing well in defense. But tonight we showed a good example of good defense. This was the reason of our win. The was we made defence in this game is valuable for us as much as the win."

"Obviously, it's a very hard loss for us to think about right now. Because for the good part of the game, we had the game controlled. But in the last four minutes of the game, they made a lot of points but we couldn't make any. Climamio changed the strategy a little bit in the last quarter and they made the difference also with their good defense. We weren't able to do the same."
BLU, DAVID
Climamio Bologna
"It was a very important game for us. This is the first win in the Euroleague and a big step. Anytime you have a chance like new coach, some players with the team, it takes a lot of type of charachter of those new things. We played tough for 40 minutes, played good defense and I think in the end, that's why we won the game. We stuck together as a team, and that's why we won the game tonight."
