Primoz Brezec - Krasnye Krylia (photo wtkanwil.com.pl - Piotr Kieplin)Eurocup newcomer Krasnye Krylia scored 63 second-half points to storm to its second consecutive Group H victory over Anwil, 83-98 on the road in Wloclawek, Poland on Tuesday. The result raised Krylia's record to 2-2 and eliminated Anwil, now 0-4, from contention for the Last 16. What was a close game through 33 minutes changed for good with an early 0-10 run in the final quarter in which Alexander Anisimov and Primoz Brezec shared all the points. Brezec ended up making 11 of 11 two-point shots to lead the visitors with 25 points to go with 12 rebounds. He had company with Gerald Green scoring 22, including 4 three-pointers, while Anisimov hit 5 triples for 19 points and Brion Rush scored 15 more. Anwil, which was as close as 67-70 early in the final quarter, couldn't stop the Krylia scorers and couldn't match them all the way, although Paul Mller finished with 19 points, Chris Thomas and Andrzej Pluta 15 each, while Nikola Jovanovic had 12. On the morning of the game, Anwil announced that it had suspended head coach Igor Grisczuk, who was replaced on Tuesday by assistant Krzysztof Szablowski.

Miller scored Wloclawek's first 5 points while Green rattled off 7 to give the visitors one of several back-and-forth leads at 10-11. Pluta joined the tug-of-war with a three-point play for Wloclawek that Anisimov matched with a single shot. That's when Brezec got going with 8 points in 2 minutes, including consecutive basket-plus-free throw combinations. Suddenly, Rush was driving for 2 points and Green dunking for 2 more as Krasnye took over the scoreboard 19-26 after 10 minutes. The visitors' lead hit 21-30 on another Brezec basket early in the second quarter before Wloclawek rallied behind Miller and Lukasz Majewski to within 30-33. The Wloclawek defense took over then, holding Krasnye to 5 points in 7 minutes, enough to let Pluta take a 36-35 lead with free throws to end the first half.

Jovanovic upped Wloclawek lead to 40-37 before Green, Ansimov and Brezec combined on a 0-11 run that propelled the visitors to a 40-48 lead. Wloclawek gave as good as it got, though, and answered with 10 consecutive points, starting with Pluta's free throws and ending with his triple, to re-take a 50-48 advantage. Rush dunked to tie for Krylia and Thomas and Jovanovic soon hit from downtown to do the same, at 56-56, for Wloclawek. Darda Berishan hit the next long-range bomb, for the hosts, but Green dunked, Rush hit 3 free throws and Jovanavic a layup for another tie, 61-61. A thrilling quarter ended with Jermareo Davidson scoring on the buzzer as Krylia held a 61-63 advantage. The scoring pace remained wicked as Krylia pushed ahead 67-72 early in the final quarter. When Anisimov hit his second and third three-pointers in as many minutes, however, the visitors truly pulled away, to 67-80, and there was little stopping them after that. Despite the best efforts of Thomas and Miller, Wloclawek couldn't score in bunches with the guests, who saw Brezec make 3 consecutive baskets with a dunk at 73-86. Green soon buried back-to-back triples and although the home crowd in Poland was certainly entertained, the victory was going back to Samara, Russia with the visitors.

"If I am not mistaken, I am only a temporary substitute. Everyone knows that we are struggling hard times right now and we are expecting changes. I think that during the game we were trying to play as good as we are able to right now, but the team from Samara showed that currently they are definitely better than us. I agree with what coach Eremin, who said they dominated in the low post. They played very simple pick-and-rolls, but we couldn’t stop them because when we moved inside, Primoz Brezec passed the ball to the scorers standing behind the 6.75-meter line and they, I mean Alexander Anisimov and Gerald Greed, shot. We were trying to move to zone, but they read it very quickly and were very effective. We took a risk by making some changes in our systems, but they knew what they need to do in each moment of the game. In only the fourth quarter they scored more than 30 points, while in the whole second half more than 60."

Krasnye Krylia
"First of all I would like to say that the final result doesn’t depict the game perfectly and moreover, tonight’s game was similar to the previous one we played at home in Russia. At the beginning of the first quarter, we played quite nice, but we lost everything in the second one. We were leading by a few points, but Anwil was able to cut our lead and took an advantage before the break. We also lost our lead in the third quarter, however we were already winning by about 10 points. Generally we played two different halves, playing both well and bad from time to time. There was no balance between defense and offense, although the offense was definitely better than the defense, which is still so-so. At this moment, I must highlight one of my players, Gerald Green, who made some big steals at the end of the game and probably broke their hope. I know that Anwil has a difficult time right now, but I wish them all the best and good luck in the next games."

"It was a very tough game because it is always hard to play against teams that have players like Brezec on their roster. We weren’t able to stop him and he scored many easy baskets from the low post. We played very hard for three quarters, but in the fourth we made some mistakes and finally lost the game. There are two games left in the EuroCup, but we have no chances so we must focus on the Polish league right now."
GREEN, GERALD
Krasnye Krylia
"I think that it was a good game and both teams played well. Anwil is very good team and they shot very well from outside tonight. We really emphasized in our practices that they are very good at shooting from the perimeter and we focused on it so much. Moreover we knew they play very well at home, so our main focus was to come in and make the game very hard for them. We wanted to play with great intensity and finally we made it because we won a very difficult game."
