
Asvel Basket stayed in the race to make it to the Last 16 in Group B by rallying from a 13-point deficit to down BG Goettingen 76-78 on the road on Tuesday. Asvel improved to 2-3 and is third in Group B. It will reach the Last 16 if it beats Hemofarm at home by at least 4 points and Goettingen wins one of its two games against Besiktas in the next 7 days. Meanwhile, Goettingen dropped to 3-1 and needs one more win to make it to the Last 16. Davon Jefferson paced the winners with 22 points on 8-of-12 two-pointers and 10 rebounds. Matt Walsh had 17, including the game-winning layup down the stretch. Mickael Gelabale added 13 while Andrija Zizic got 10 for Asvel. Robert Kulawick led 6 Goettingen players in double digits with 13 points. Trenton Meacham and Dwayne Anderson each added 12 while Michael Meeks, Jason Boone and Mike Scott had 10 apiece for the hosts, that led 54-41 midway through the third quarter. Walsh and an outstanding Jefferson fueled the guests' comeback while 3-of-3 free throws by Gelabale tied it at 76-76. Adam Waleskowski missed a key shot and Walsh kept Asvel alive in the competition down the stretch.
Asvel found an early go-to guy in Zizic, who had a layup and a jumper in an 1-7 opening run. Scott stepped up for Goettingen with a jumper and Waleskowski added a layup but an unstoppable Zizic and a jumper by Jefferson kept the guests ahead, 5-11. Jefferson took over with a put-back dunk and Gelabale struck from downtown to make it a double-digit game, 5-16. Meeks took over with consecutive three-pointers and Kulawicz copied him soon after that for a 14-18 Goettingen deficit. Meeks made free throws and Boone added a dunk but Gelabale and Matt Walsh kept the guests ahead, 18-22. Meacham followed free throws with a jumper for a 22-22 tie after 10 minutes. Jefferson kept pacing Asvel with a put-back basket but Louis Dale and Meacham completed the hosts' comeback, 26-24, early in the second quarter. Leo Westermann downed a three-pointer and Kim Tillie dunked it to give the guests some fresh air, 26-29. It didn't last long, however, as a three-pointer by Jermaine Raffington ignited an 11-0 run that Scott capped with a dunk to give Goettingen a 37-29 margin. Walsh split free throws but Kulawick gave the hosts a 39-30 lead. Walsh stepped up with 4 points in a 0-6 run that allowed Asvel to get as close as 39-36 at halftime.
Boone scored down low immediately after the break and Anderson added a put-back layup for a 43-36 Goettingen lead. Kulawicz buried his second three-pointer but Jefferson and Zizic kept Asvel within 46-41. Goettingen improved its defense to make Asvel go scoreless for almost 3 minutes. Meanwhile, Boone and Kulawick combined for all points in an 8-0 run that made it a 13-point game, 54-41. Jeferson shined with a dunk but Meeks matched with free throws. Bangaly Fofana stepped up with a layup while free throws by Walsh and another dunk by Jefferson got the guests within 58-49 after 30 minutes. Walsh and Paul Lacombe buried back-to-back triples to ignite Asvel's comeback early in the fourth quarter. Jefferson soon added a layup to make it a three-point game, 60-57. Scott and Gelabale traded three-pointers but a dunk by Anderson and a layup off a steal by Meacham gave Goettingen some fresh air, 67-60, with over 4 minutes left. Walsh kept pacing Asvel with a three-point play and free throws by Jefferson got the guests within 68-67. Anderson sank a key three-pointer and Scott matched Gelabale's jumper with a dunk for a 73-69 score with 2 minutes left. Jefferson stayed on fire with a three-point play and Lacombe split free throws for a 73-73 tie. Anderson sank 3-of-4 free throws but Gelabale bettered that with 3-of-3 foul shots for a 76-76 tie. Waleskowski missed a layup and Walsh became the hero for Asvel with the game-winning basket!
