Zenit still unbeaten after trip to Vilnius

Zenit St. Petersburg held off a later Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius charge to claim a 65-70 road win and leave the Lithuanian capital with a perfect record. Zenit imporved to 4-0 in Group E, while dropping Rytas to 1-3. Zenit took charge early and led 23-45 at halftime. Rytas rallied in the second half to tie the game at 57-57. Zenit remained ahead and despite Rytas coming within 1 three times in the closing minutes the visitors held on for the victory. Artem Vikhrov and Zab Dowdell scored 17 points apiece to pace the winners, while Pavel Antipov added 10. Ksistof Lavrinovic scored 18 for Rytas, Antanas Kavaliauskas posted 15 points and 9 rebounds and Nicolas Laprovittola amassed 13 points, 5 assists and 4 steals in defeat.

Zenit won the opening tip and Vikhrov got his team on the scoreboard. Kavaliauskas scored first for Rytas. A Vikhrov triple sent ZEnit in front, but Laprovittola helped keep Rytas close. But the visitors went on a 1-7 push to end the quarter with an 11-18 lead. Baskets by Dowdell, Antipov and Vikhrov allowed Zenit to double up the hosts, 12-24. Gediminas Orelink looked to ignite the hosts with a three-pointer, however Antipov connected on back-to-back threes to make it 17-32. Lavrinovic scored inside for the hosts only to see Zenit reel off 11 straight points. Dowdell scored twice and Kyle Landry added a three to make it 19-43. Kavaliauskas made it 23-45 at halftime.

Rytas scored the first 5 points of the second half to make it 28-45 after an Adas Juskevicius three-pointer. Janis Timma re-extended the difference into the 20s and it was comfortable for Zenit at 36-55 after Antipov scored with two and a half minutes left in the quarter. Lavrinovic nailed a three-pointer and a three-point play in a 10-0 finish to the quarter to make it 46-55. The Rytas defense came alive and held Zenit to a single basket in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter and tied the game at 57-57 on Kavaliauskas free throws. Dowdell connected from downtown to put Zenit pack ahead, but Rytas stayed close and got within 1 with each of its next four baskets. Zenit would not let the hosts any closer though and sealed the victory with Dowdell and Landry free throws down the stretch.

"The game clearly showed that we are two kinds of a team. In the first half we didn’t fight, didn’t play defense and allowed them to score 45 points. In the second half our defense was much better. It’s a matter of doing what we are supposed to do or not. But to catch them we wasted too much energy and that’s why our decisions at the end were bad."
KARASEV, VASILY
Zenit St Petersburg
"It was nervous and stressful game; after this kind of game all you can do is go to the hospital. In the first half we played well in defense and scored well. After the break Lietuvos Rytas’s pressure led to our mistakes and they scored a lot of easy points. After that we became nervous on offense, missed some shots and Lietuvos Rytas grabbed the rebounds. But in the end we were better again and won."
