Murcia beats Buducnost, advances to Top 16

UCAM Murcia advanced to the 7DAYS EuroCup Top 16 by topping Buducnost VOLI Podgorica 75-86 in the Montenegrin capital in Group C on Wednesday. Murcia improved to 4-1 in Group C, while Buducnost dropped to 0-5. Vitor Faverani led the winners with 21 points on 10-of-10 two-point shooting. Vitor Benite added 19 points, while Facu Campazzo had 14 points, 9 assists and 4 steals for Murcia. Marcus Williams led Buducnost with 23 points. J.R. Reynolds added 11 while Shawn James had 10 for the hosts. Faverani became the second player to make at least 10 two-point shots with no misses in EuroCup history - Robertas Javtokas of Dynamo Moscow hit all of his 12 two-point attempts against Slask Wroclaw on February 19, 2008. He helped Murcia finish the game with a 61.5% two-point shooting percentage. Murcia also outrebounded its opponents 26-38 and had 17 assists to just 12 turnovers.

Petar Popovic and Williams gave Buducnost an early 4-0 lead, but Faverani dunked twice and added another basket to put Murcia in charge, 6-8. Buducnost found a new go-to guy in Boris Savovic, who had 4 points in a 12-0 run that Williams capped with consecutive baskets that made it a double-digit game, 18-8. Benite brought Murcia a bit closer, 21-15, after 10 minutes. Benite downed a triple and Faverani dunked again to make it 21-20 early in the second quarter. Buducnost found its regular go-to guy in Williams, who got plenty of help from Reynolds to boost the hosts' margin to 33-24. Three-pointers by Nemanja Vranes and Bojan Subotic soon made it a double-digit game, 41-31. Sadiel Rojas and Campazzo kept Murcia within 41-35 at halftime. Faverani dunked and Jose Angel Antelo added a triple for a 43-40 score after the break. Suad Sehovic and James rescued Buducnost from downtown, but Rojas and Faverani brought Murcia even closer, 49-48. Reynolds and Suad Sehovic hit free throws and Williams took over to give Buducnost a 61-53 lead, which Murcia cut to 61-58 after 30 minutes. Free throws by Williams gave Buducnost its last lead, 63-61, early in the fourth quarter. Campazzo had 5 points in a 0-9 run that put Murcia ahead for good. Reynolds, Williams and Savovic got the hosts as close as 71-73, but a corner three-pointer by Rojas, a layup-plus-foul by Faverani and a triple by Campazzo sealed the outcome down the stretch.

We played bad pick-and-roll defense in the first quarter - including me, I was on the court. We allowed a lot of layups, but in the end, it is the win that really matters. We had the character required with Coach Oscar Quintana's help. We brought our best skills on the court directed by Facu Campazzo's. We crashed the boards, played good defense and played really well."
