Gran Canaria shoots its way to record-breaking win
Herbalife Gran Canaria took a step closer to sealing a Top 16 spot by roaring past Promitheas Patras 98-83 at home on Wednesday. Gran Canaria improved to 4-1 in Group D, while Promitheas dropped to 2-3. Stan Okoye led the winners with 25 points, Tomas Dimsa added 17, Matt Costello posted 16 points and 10 rebounds and Fabio Santana netted 10 points for Gran Canaria. Eleftherios Mantzoukas paced Promitheas with 24 points on 6-of-6 three-point shooting, Nikola Radicevic added 16 against his former team and Vangelis Mantzaris scored 13 for the visitors, who led 51-52 at halftime. Okoye and Santana stepped up after the break as Gran Canaria grabbed a 79-72 at the end of the third quarter, extending it to 89-75 soon after that and never looked back.
Radicevic got Promitheas going with a driving layup and a floater. Costello scored in transition and Okoye followed a triple with a coast-to-coast layup for an 8-4 Gran Canaria lead. Radicevic answered from downtown, Mouhammad Faye and Dimsa each hit twice from beyond the arc and Ian Miller banked in a shot to make it 14-15. After Danny Agbelese hit a jump hook, Radicevic scored in penetration and Faye added a put-back layup. Dimsa put Gran Canaria back ahead, 22-21. Costello and Beqa Burjanadze each buried three-pointers in an 8-0 run that gave Gran Canaria a 30-21 advantage, which Mantzaris cut to 30-24 after 10 minutes. Mantzoukas followed a triple with a layup early in the second quarter. Mantzaris bettered Dimsa's layup with a bomb from downtown and Agbelese scored in the paint for a 32-34 Promitheas edge. Wiley rescued the hosts with a put-back layup and Dimsa sank his fifth triple, but Mantzoukas and Mantzaris boosted the visitors' lead to 37-43. Wiley took over with a put-back slam and a one-handed baseline jumper and Okoye hit a couple of three-pointers, the second one at the halftime buzzer, to bring Gran Canaria within 51-52 at the break.
Mantzoukas buried his fourth triple right after halftime. Frankie Ferrari bettered Radicevic's jumper with a three-pointer, igniting an 8-0 run that Okoye capped with a shot from downtown for a 60-57 Gran Canaria lead. Mantzoukas, Okoye, Athanasios Bazinas, Ferrari and Santana all hit from beyond the arc in extending the margin to 71-65. Okoye did even better with a four-point play, but Mantzoukas and Mantzaris kept Promitheas in the hunt, 76-69. Georgios Tanoulis scored down low before Ferrari downed a triple for a 79-72 Gran Canaria edge after 30 minutes. Mantzoukas hit a floater early in the fourth quarter. Burjanadze improved on that with a three-pointer and Costello added a layup for a double-digit Gran Canaria lead, 84-74. Santana scored off a steal and added a triple that broke the game open, 89-75, with 7 minutes left. Radicevic answered from downtown, but Santana and Costello sealed the outcome, 93-78, with less than 3 minutes left.
Pivotal performer
Stan Okoye made the difference in his game with his outstanding all-around performance. He finished the game with 25 points on 6-of-11 three-point shooting plus 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 block and 4 fouls drawn for a PIR of 28. His previous career-high was 11.
Game-changing moment
A rain of three-pointers early in the third quarter allowed Gran Canaria to take control of the game. Okoye hit three, Ferrari added 2 more and Santana sank another to make it a double-digit game, 75-65. Promitheas never recovered.
Stellar stat
Gran Canaria outrebounded Promitheas 41-31, including 18 offensive boards. Promitheas was only allowed to grab 4 offensive rebounds, which allowed Gran Canaria to get a lot of easy points in transition. The hosts only committed 12 turnovers and forced Promitheas into 20.
