Gran Canaria shoots its way to record-breaking win

Herbalife Gran Canaria took a step closer to sealing a Top 16 spot by roaring past Promitheas Patras 98-83 at home on Wednesday. Gran Canaria improved to 4-1 in Group D, while Promitheas dropped to 2-3. Stan Okoye led the winners with 25 points, Tomas Dimsa added 17, Matt Costello posted 16 points and 10 rebounds and Fabio Santana netted 10 points for Gran Canaria. Eleftherios Mantzoukas paced Promitheas with 24 points on 6-of-6 three-point shooting, Nikola Radicevic added 16 against his former team and Vangelis Mantzaris scored 13 for the visitors, who led 51-52 at halftime. Okoye and Santana stepped up after the break as Gran Canaria grabbed a 79-72 at the end of the third quarter, extending it to 89-75 soon after that and never looked back.

Radicevic got Promitheas going with a driving layup and a floater. Costello scored in transition and Okoye followed a triple with a coast-to-coast layup for an 8-4 Gran Canaria lead. Radicevic answered from downtown, Mouhammad Faye and Dimsa each hit twice from beyond the arc and Ian Miller banked in a shot to make it 14-15. After Danny Agbelese hit a jump hook, Radicevic scored in penetration and Faye added a put-back layup. Dimsa put Gran Canaria back ahead, 22-21. Costello and Beqa Burjanadze each buried three-pointers in an 8-0 run that gave Gran Canaria a 30-21 advantage, which Mantzaris cut to 30-24 after 10 minutes. Mantzoukas followed a triple with a layup early in the second quarter. Mantzaris bettered Dimsa's layup with a bomb from downtown and Agbelese scored in the paint for a 32-34 Promitheas edge. Wiley rescued the hosts with a put-back layup and Dimsa sank his fifth triple, but Mantzoukas and Mantzaris boosted the visitors' lead to 37-43. Wiley took over with a put-back slam and a one-handed baseline jumper and Okoye hit a couple of three-pointers, the second one at the halftime buzzer, to bring Gran Canaria within 51-52 at the break.

Mantzoukas buried his fourth triple right after halftime. Frankie Ferrari bettered Radicevic's jumper with a three-pointer, igniting an 8-0 run that Okoye capped with a shot from downtown for a 60-57 Gran Canaria lead. Mantzoukas, Okoye, Athanasios Bazinas, Ferrari and Santana all hit from beyond the arc in extending the margin to 71-65. Okoye did even better with a four-point play, but Mantzoukas and Mantzaris kept Promitheas in the hunt, 76-69. Georgios Tanoulis scored down low before Ferrari downed a triple for a 79-72 Gran Canaria edge after 30 minutes. Mantzoukas hit a floater early in the fourth quarter. Burjanadze improved on that with a three-pointer and Costello added a layup for a double-digit Gran Canaria lead, 84-74. Santana scored off a steal and added a triple that broke the game open, 89-75, with 7 minutes left. Radicevic answered from downtown, but Santana and Costello sealed the outcome, 93-78, with less than 3 minutes left.

Pivotal performer

Stan Okoye made the difference in his game with his outstanding all-around performance. He finished the game with 25 points on 6-of-11 three-point shooting plus 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 block and 4 fouls drawn for a PIR of 28. His previous career-high was 11.

Game-changing moment

A rain of three-pointers early in the third quarter allowed Gran Canaria to take control of the game. Okoye hit three, Ferrari added 2 more and Santana sank another to make it a double-digit game, 75-65. Promitheas never recovered.

Stellar stat

Gran Canaria outrebounded Promitheas 41-31, including 18 offensive boards. Promitheas was only allowed to grab 4 offensive rebounds, which allowed Gran Canaria to get a lot of easy points in transition. The hosts only committed 12 turnovers and forced Promitheas into 20.

Gran Canaria set a club record by downing 19 three-point shots. Its previous record was 17, which it did twice - first against Cedevita Zagreb in 2011 and then versus MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg in 2015. UNICS Kazan and LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne share the EuroCup record with 20 three-pointers. Both teams combined for 33 three-point shots made, which was 1 shy of the EuroCup record. Cedevita and Gran Canaria combined for 34 three-pointers on February 1, 2011.

Next game

Both teams return to 7DAYS EuroCup action next week - on Wednesday, November 11. Promitheas hosts Dolomiti Energia Trento and Gran Canaria visits Nanterre 92.

"Defense [was the difference in the second half]. Without defense, there is no paradise, because in the first half, we had a lot of problems defending their one-on-ones and they moved the ball and had a great three-point shooting percentage. In the second half, our defense pushed the ball and denied the pass and it was possible to run. And when we can run, we can win."

"There were two different halves. In the first half, we had a lot of problems with transition defense and stopping their one-on-ones. We improved a lot our pick-and-roll defense in the second half. We stopped them and that made the difference in the game, it made it possible to win this game. We missed Andrew Albicy, who got injured in warm-ups. We hope it is not serious. That made us change our game plan, but it is true that the improvements we made in the Spanish League, playing with more aggressiveness and energy, we didn't see it that much today. We allowed them to play at their rhythm. The difference is that we allowed around 50 points in the first half and around 30 in the second. We had to hold on to our defense until we have the chance to improve on offense."

"I have to say that I am very proud of my team and my players. I will explain why, what is the reason. Some of our players are still teenagers, playing in the U18 team. They came and played in the game as men. They showed what Promitheas means and what Promitheas wants to do in the future in Europe... Congratulations to Gran Canaria. We are very thankful and appreciate their hospitality, they helped us out on anything we needed here on the island. We did the same in Patras and that is why we are organizations that like to help each other."

"I think that we stayed together. After our last game in the ACB, we needed a win tonight. We knew that they were lacking a little bit of their players because of the situation that they have in Greece, so we knew we had to come out there very aggressive. I don't think we did our best defensively, but offensively, I think we gained a lot of confidence tonight."
