Maccabi storms through Vitoria-Gasteiz

Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv hit a club-record 17 three-pointers and extended its winning streak to six games with a resounding 83-113 road win over KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz. The victory improved Maccabi's record to 6-2 on the season and tied it for the best record in the league. On the other hand, Baskonia suffered its first home loss of this campaign and also its worst home loss in EuroLeague history, dropping to 3-5. Shooting the lights out from long range and led by Scottie Wilbekin, Maccabi had a 10-point lead late in the first quarter, went into halftime up by 23 points, and broke the 30-point barrier early in the third quarter. Wilbekin netted 20 points on 6-for-8 three-point shooting. Elijah Bryant scored 19, while John DiBartolomeo and Nate Wolters scored 14 apiece. Tyler Dorsey had 12 points, and Othello Hunter collected 10 points plus 9 rebounds in a victory in which Maccabi also tied a club record for the most points scored in a road game this century. Baskonia had only two double-digit scorers, Tornike Shengelia with 31 points and Patricio Garino with 24, both setting new career-highs.

Maccabi was hot from long range from the get-go. Quincy Acy hit a corner triple before Wilbekin nailed back-to-back shots to make it 9-16. Shengelia scored 5 points, including a three-pointer that got Baskonia within 17-18, but DiBartolomeo hit back-to-back triples and Yovel Zoosman finished a fast break with a layup to open an 18-28 margin late in the first quarter. The hosts stopped the bleeding through Nik Stauskas getting to the free-throw line, but more triples from Wilbekin, his fourth and fifth, capped a 0-9 run to make it 24-39. Shengelia knocked one down from long range for the hosts, but the visitors kept increasing the margin. Hunter scored 6 points, Tarik Black had a three-point play and Bryant hit a three to make it 32-55 at halftime. Black's dunk and consecutive three-pointers from Wolters and Wilbekin extended the margin to 34-65. Garino and Shengelia hit from long range to give a much-needed spark to Baskonia's offense, but Wolters and DiBartolomeo replied in the same fashion on the other end. Garino scored 5 more points, but Bryant strung together 7 points, including Maccabi's 14th triple in 20 attempts to make it 49-80 with 3:30 left in the third. Garino and Shengelia were the only players scoring field goals for Baskonia in the quarter, but the visitors kept the margin through Bryant and Dorsey, 58-86 going into the fourth. Dorsey's three-pointer made it 61-93 early in the fourth and Maccabi continued strong to the finish.

Winning streaking

After opening the season with two losses, Maccabi has now strung together six wins. This is club's longest winning streak since the 2013-14 season, when the team won the last four of the regular season and the first four of the Top 16 before going on to win the EuroLeague title.

Road scoring mark

These 113 points tied Maccabi scoring record in a road game and were the most points a road team has scored in a single-game in almost 12 years, since Panathinaikos Athens set a EuroLeague record with 123 points at Chorale Roanne in November 2007. Maccabi tied for the second-highest scoring output by a road team in a non-overtime game, a mark also held by Maccabi from when it also scored 113 at AEK Athens in December 2004.

Club record threes

This was Maccabi's 431st EuroLeague game this century and the first time it hit 17 three-pointers in a single game, setting a club record. Maccabi hit 14 of its first 20 three-pointers through the first 27 minutes to lead 49-80 and then went 3 for 9 the rest of the way to tie its club record.

Baskonia's scoring duo

Tornike Shengelia scored 31 points, surpassing his previous career-high of 25 points. Patricio Garino netted 24, shattering his previous career-high of 16. The two players scored 23 of Baskonia 26 points in the third quarter and combined to score 41 of their team's first 56 points.

Home worst

This is the first time in EuroLeague history that Baskonia lost at home by 30 points. Its previous worst defeat was a 65-94 loss, also against Maccabi, back in the 2001-02 season.

Next up

Next week in Round 9, Maccabi travels to play a fellow 6-2 team, AX Armani Exchange Milan, on Tuesday before Baskonia hosts defending champion CSKA Moscow on Wednesday.

Head Coaches

PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz
"Congratulations to Maccabi on a victory and an excellent game and they deserved the victory. This is by far the worst game we played this season. We were completely run over by Maccabi. It is up to us to ask for forgiveness from the crowd that came to watch the game tonight. They were scoring on almost every shot and we were unable to score ourselves. As the game went on, the difference got bigger. They played really hard and we were unable to respond. When you play at home and have 15 fouls less than the opponent, it is a sign something has gone wrong. We have to analyze from that point on."
SFAIROPOULOS, IOANNIS
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
"I think from the beginning we controlled the game and the rhythm of the game. Baskonia is a team, especially on home court, if they find their rhythm they can kill anybody. The good thing is we played good defense, especially in the second quarter when they scored 11 points, it was crucial for the continuation. Meanwhile, we had a great offensive game in the first and second half, we scored 113 points. We had an excellent day, I believe because of great defense we had great confidence offensively, and great rhythm, we shot well from the outside. We have to stay humble, we have to work hard, it is too early to have other thoughts. It is too early to judge, to make a conclusion about our games so far because we did not finish even one-third of the league. We are in a good momentum, we are playing well offensively and defensively. We need to keep it like that. We are humble, we don't want to exaggerate by talking a lot, we need to talk on the court. This is how we started and we will continue like that until the end."

"It feels good. It is a tough place to play, it is my first win here so I am pretty excited, we played a pretty good all-around game. We are trying to get better each game and I think we have gotten better each game that we played. We just need to build from here and see what we can accomplish."
WOLTERS, NATE
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
"We got off to a good start in the first half. We knew they will come out aggressive in the second half, and we played well the first 5 minutes to put the game away. It helps when we shoot the ball like that, it always makes the game a lot easier. Defensively we were pretty good for the most part. It is a good win; we have a tough stretch coming up, so it is good to get this one. Every game is tough, especially on the road, and to get any road win in the EuroLeague you got to play well and we were able to do that tonight. We know it is still early and we got a lot of work. We just have to continue to work hard and take it game by game."
