Zalgiris Kaunas remained alive for a spot in the final of the Euroleague Basketball Nike International Junior Tournament - Milan as the two-time champion beat Fenerbahce Istanbul 79-68 in Group B action. Martynas Echodas collected 26 points and 12 rebounds while Martynas Varnas added 25 points for Zalgiris, which improved to 1-1 in the group. Kaunas can reach Sunday’s final if it beats Real Madrid on Saturday. Fenerbahce dropped to 0-2 in the group despite Batuhan Gungor (18 points), Utku Saraloglu (15), Atakan Turkoglu (13) and Baris Yurteri (12) all scoring in double digits. Zalgiris went ahead 6-2 and was up 10-9 when Fenerbahce scored the last six points of the quarter for a 15-10 lead. Saraloglu scored the first two points of the second period for 11 points already and a 17-10 advantage. The cushion was 19-13 when Zalgiris went on a 12-0 run for a 25-19 lead. Fenerbahce responded with the next seven points to take the lead. But Zalgiris led 34-30 at halftime. Kaunas used a 7-0 surge early in the second half to open a 10-point advantage 45-35. Istanbul punched right back with a 9-2 spurt to move within three points. And the Kaunas lead was 57-54 going into the fourth quarter. Turkoglu opened the fourth with a three-pointer to tie the game. Zalgiris answered with the next five points and did not let Fenerbahce get back into the lead. And the two-time NIJT champions closed the game with a 9-2 run over the final two minutes to decide the game.
