MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg leaves Le Mans with key OT victory

MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg survived overtime to beat Le Mans Sarthe Basket 75-81 on Tuesday. The victory ensured Ludwigsburg a spot in the top half of Group B at the midway point of the regular season with a 3-2 record, while Le Mans slipped to 1-4. After Chris Lofton’s three on the buzzer forced overtime for Le Mans, the visitors took charge with a 0-7 run to start the extra session and held on the rest of the way. Shawn Huff led the Ludwigsburg attack with 21 points, while Jon Brockman dominated inside with 12 points and 17 rebounds. His 9 offensive rebounds were 2 off the competition record. Royce O’Neale and Mustafa Shakur added 11 points apiece for the winners. Tywain McKee paced the Le Mans attack with 17 points, Lofton added 14, Roberto Dozier and Mouphtaou Yarou scored 11 each and Mickael Gelabale 10. Yarou also collected 10 rebounds.

Dozier scored first for Le Mans, but O’Neale gave Ludwigsburg a slim lead. Dozier added a put-back as the hosts climbed ahead 8-4 after six minutes. O’Neale and Alvaro Munoz-Borchers kept Ludwigsburg close, but free throws by Lahaou Konate and Damion Jones continued pushing Le Mans forward. Shakur hit twice from the line to end the first quarter at 13-11. Shakur gave Ludwigsburg a slim lead before a Rocky Trice triple made it 21-26. Le Mans raced ahead as Lofton and Dozier hit back-to-back threes in a 10-0 run. Adam Waleskowski only drew Ludwigsburg within 31-28 at halftime.

O’Neale and Tekele Cotton tied the score twice at the start of the third quarter before Dozier put Le Mans back in front. Back-to-back threes by Trice gave Ludwigsburg control at 41-46. Free throws by Dozier and McKee’s jumper brought the hosts within 47-48 at the end of the third quarter. Petr Cornelie and Huff traded threes and leads early in the fourth. The trend continued as Lofton gave Le Mans an edge only to see Brad Loesing’s three make it 55-56. Gelabale tied it twice for the hosts, but Brockman put the visitors back up each time. Cotton opened the door for Le Mans when he split free throws with a chance to make it a two-possession game in the closing seconds. Lofton capitalized with a triple on the buzzer to tie it at 66-66 and force an extra session.

Huff and Shakur scored to open the overtime period and Brockman’s three-point play made it a 7-point lead. Le Mans came back to within 3 on McKee free throws, but Ludwigsburg did not panic. A McKee three-pointer gave Le Mans hope at 75-78 with 27 seconds to go. But Shakur netted 2 free throws at the other end and Brockman rejected a McKee layup to wrap up an important road win.

Head Coaches

KUNTER, ERMAN
Le Mans Sarthe Basket
"It was difficult tonight. What made the difference was the 13 more offensive rebounds and 6 more turnover. In total, 19 more possessions for them. The rest is almost the same. On three-pointers, we did better than them. Ludwigsburg is a very well-built team, very athletic, they move well, they attack the rebounds and cost us a lot of energy. Now we will try to hang on, we did not let go, but that is not enough, losing rebounds is a lack of concentration. We should have won, unfortunately."
PATRICK, JOHN
MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg
"We played to make the opposing team tired. In overtime, we were fresher than them, we had more energy. But we got a fright, though I had told my players not to let Lofton shoot, and he made incredible shots. It is a good arena for me, I love playing in Le Mans."

Players

LOFTON, CHRIS
Le Mans Sarthe Basket
"I'm disappointed for my team. We did not have enough energy to capture rebounds, this is the reason for our defeat. In addition, they played hard on defense. But nothing is impossible, we must stay positive and continue to practice."
BROCKMAN, JON
MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg
"It was hard, but it was a good win, especially on the road. This is important for our qualification, but we should not celebrate too fast. It is true that I took 17 rebounds, but I also missed shots. My team did a great job, especially in defense."
