Reds hold off Darussafaka for important road win

Olympiacos Piraeus turned to its defense and its bench in holding off Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul 71-77 on the road on Friday at Volkswagen Arena. Olympiacos improved its record to 6-4 ,while Darussafaka dropped its third straight game and fell to 5-5. The visitors took the lead for good in the second quarter behind Matt Lojeski and opened a 40-52 lead in the third. Darussafaka rallied with help from three-pointers by Dairis Bertans and Scottie Wilbekin, but Erick Green scored all of his 10 points late in the third and in the fourth quarter to help Olympiacos keep the lead and close out the game. Lojeski scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half and also collected 7 rebounds. Georgios Printezis also scored 15 points and Vassilis Spanoulis added 13 in victory. Will Clyburn paced the hosts with 21 points, Brad Wanamaker netted 11, and Furkan Aldemir collected 10 points and 6 rebounds in defeat.

Spanoulis was pulling all the strings for the visitors at the start of the game. He scored 6 points and dished a pair of assists, and with help from Printezis had Olympiacos up 9-14. Clyburn and James Anderson got Darussafaka going, but the Reds remained in front. A put-back and a corner-three from Lojeski opened a 18-24 edge, but Wanamaker hit from long range to help the hosts cut it to 21-24 after one quarter. The teams traded leads in the second until Lojeski got hot, scoring 8 points, including a pair of triples, in helping Olympiacos built a 28-37 lead. Olympiacos had trouble containing Clyburn, and Wanamaker drove for a basket, but a three-pointer from Kostas Papanikolaou helped the Reds take a 34-43 advantage into halftime. The teams traded baskets in the third before the visitors held Darussafaka scoreless for a full three minutes and a wide-open three from Vangelis Mantzaris gave Olympiacos a 40-52 cushion. Dairis Bertans ended Darussafaka’s drought with a three, before his second triple helped cut the margin to 4 points. Olympiacos went into the final stanza up 51-57, but Wanamaker hit a three, and hooked up twice with Aldemir to get the hosts within 61-63. But Wanamaker committed his fourth personal foul and had to take a seat on the bench. Scottie Wilbekin followed with back-to-back threes for the hosts, but only after Green hit from downtown and Daniel Hackett converted a three-point play for Olympiacos. The visitors had Spanoulis step up again in clutch time; he found Green behind the arc and Printezis in the low post to help the Reds to a 68-76 lead with 1:42 to go, which proved to be a margin too big for the hosts to overcome.

"Congrats to Olympiacos. Obviously it was a very tough and close game. Our poor second quarter really put us in a hole, which we fought back from to a 2-point game, and I think their experience took over at that point. It is a price you pay early in the season, you got to learn these lessons. It is painful, but it is part of growing as a team. I am really happy to see our gym full. We set a record for tickets sold today. And that is also part of our goal, to build a fan-base and create interest in this club going forward, and I think we are doing that. I thank the fans for coming out and supporting us, they really helped us. We played again without two of our forward-centers, now almost for a month without Luke Harangody, and Marcus Slaughter got hurt two days ago. We still don’t know what the process with him will be. In the second quarter we had problems, we missed a lot of easy shots around the basket. Olympiacos is a team that knows how to make you pay for turnovers and misses, and they did that well in the second quarter. We are getting the ball inside, but we are not finishing well enough. Second half we did. We got to finish, because that stops fast breaks. I am concerned with 16 turnovers. If you want to win a game against a quality opponent like this, you can’t give away the ball; that leads to their fast breaks and easy points. And you have to make foul shots. We are 40% from the foul line, and we only shot 10 free throws. That is not good either. There is a lot of things."

"It is a very good win for us because when we played on the road and against a very good team like Darussafaka, the game has a very big importance. I think we controlled the game from beginning to the end. We started good offensively. We had a good defensive game, especially in the second period, keeping Darussafaka to a low-scoring 13 points. We built a good enough point difference at halftime. During halftime, we discussed it with players and said Darussafaka will surely react. We saw that first of all in the third period, when they scored 3 three-pointers in a row. But we also scored some tough triples in third quarter. Although Darussafaka shot 60% from three-point line in this game, we managed to win because we held them to a low-scoring 71 points, when their average is 81 points. Most importantly, we showed character at the end of the game when every possession was important and crucial. And I think we deserved to win. EuroLeague is very tough this season, everybody understands that, and we need to continue to fight every game and stay focused, because the season is very long."

"We know how important every game is in the EuroLeague. We need to win home games to stay as a playoff contender. But we came off poorly in the first half, in particular in the second quarter when we missed too many shots. Somehow we fought back in the second half, but we committed too many turnovers and had a bitter loss. We are disappointed to get this third loss in a row. Now we have a tough road game at Baskonia. We have to get a good result to get back on track in the EuroLeague."

"We needed to have a good game today. We knew it was going to be a difficult game. Just happy everybody helped the team win. It is not an easy place to play, so a good win for us."
