Baskonia fights off Galatasaray for sixth win

Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz protected its home court and improved to a 6-4 record on the season by holding off the visiting Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul 69-62 on Friday night at the Fernando Buesa Arena. Baskonia had a great start to the game behind Johannes Voigtamann, building a 15-point lead, but the visitors got it going, caught the momentum and took the lead 38-40 early in the third quarter. However, Baskonia never stopped playing defense, and offensively got help from Andrea Bargnani and Shane Larkin before a pair of game-sealing driving layups from Rodrigue Beaubois. Voigtmann and Beaubois each scored 13 points. Kim Tillie collected 11 rebounds, and Larkin dished 9 assists. For Galatasaray, whose record dropped to 3-7, Tibor Pleiss amassed 16 points plus 11 rebounds against his former team, and Blake Schilb also scored 16.

Voigtmann had a fantastic start, scoring 11 points in less than 7 minutes and giving the hosts 13-6 lead. After Voigtmann took a seat, Baskonia found offense through Beaubois, who hit 2 triples, including one to end first quarter 22-9. The hosts out-hustled the visitors with their big energy, and back-to-back alley-oop connections from Larkin to Ilimane Diop opened a 28-13 lead. Galatasaray suffered 0-for-11 shooting from long range before Jon Dielber hit one in transition midway through the second quarter. Sinan Guler quickly followed with one of his, cutting the difference to 31-23. That gave the visitors the boost they needed. Guler added a block and a dish for Schilb on a fastbreak before baskets from Pleiss helped Galatasaray get within 36-32 at halftime. The visitors carried the momentum over into the second half, with Schilb’s jumper and triple capping a 0-8 run to a 38-40 lead. But Bargnani, who did not play in the first half, got into a zone, scoring 9 points, and with a jumper from Larkin and a second-chance triple from Jaka Blazic, Baskonia restored a 50-44 margin. The hosts maintained that lead and behind a series of plays on both ends of the floor from Hanga, Tillie and especially Larkin. Like that, Baskonia’s lead was back in double figures, 62-52. The visitors tried another rally, as Guller’s three and Vladimir Micov’s runner cut it to 65-62 with 1:17 remaining, but Beaubois closed out the game with a pair of driving layups.

"We started the game really well, doing what we had to do, especially on defense: giving intensity to each action, especially when they were trying to play in the post and in special situations they were looking for Micov. However, with Micov we made two or three mistakes in the first 20 minutes. After we defended him a little bit better. And then in the three or four three minutes before going to the locker room, we went down a little because of the fouls. We wanted to save the players with two fouls, and the players we had on the court, I think we were a little bit tired and we struggled to keep our level on defense. But in the last 20 minutes we were a serious team, doing what we had to do, without scoring a lot, of course, but understanding how to play without and with Bargnani. We have to improve a little when he's on the court the differences we need to have ball mobility."

“We started the game bad. In the first quarter, we missed a lot of shots, made turnovers, and we lost control of the game. That was not our plan. After the first quarter I think we played better than Baskonia. We started playing good defense with our switching man-to-man. Offensively, in the first half we scored only 2 of 15 three-point shots. In the second half, we continued what we did in the second quarter. We came back and took the lead, but I think tonight we missed our regular shots. We missed 24 three-point shots, with Jon Diebler and Vlado Micov making only 1 of 12 shots, and we stayed at only 62 points. Congrats to Baskonia. It was not a spectacular game. We missed shots and gave up a lot of offensive rebounds, and lost the game.”

"Defense was key tonight. Last couple of games we have given up a lot of points on defense. Tonight we locked in on defensive end. We did not score like we usually do, but defense won the game. I got a shot in my ribs on first play of the game. It hurts a little bit, but we got the win, so it feels a lot better."
PLEISS, TIBOR
Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
“We had a good chance to beat them. The first quarter was really tough for us, because Baskonia had a double-digit lead. That hurt us a lot to come back. We came back, but then allowed a lot of easy layups. We had a lot of problems from the three-point line. I think we missed 24 three-point shots, and made only 5 of them. It was really painful for us, but we have to stay focused and keep going.”
