Gist, Calathes double-doubles give Greens fifth straight win

Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens extended its winning streak to five games by downing Unicaja Malaga 82-71 on Friday at home in the Greek capital. The win lifted Panathinaikos to 7-3 record and retained its share of third place, while Unicaja lost a fourth straight game, dropping to 3-7. The two teams traded blows for the first three quarters, before the hosts pulled away in the fourth behind Nick Calathes and Nikos Pappas, not to mention a barrage of triples. Unicaja had several leads in the second half, but Panathinaikos hit 7 of its 13 three-pointers in the fourth quarter to build a 10-point margin and get a hard-fought victory. James Gist starred with 17 points plus 11 rebounds, and Calathes had 16 points and 12 assists. K.C Rivers netter 15 points, and Pappas scored 10 of his 11 points in the final quarter. Nemanja Nedovic led Unicaja with 16 points, Carlos Suarez had 14 and Dragan Milosavljevic scored 12 in defeat.

The teams traded baskets from the start, including a triple from Matt Lojeski on one end and Nedovic on the other. But Gist scored 8 of the next 10 points for Panathinaikos, including an alley-oop dunk from Calathes that opened a 15-9 lead. Unicaja answered with buckets from Dejan Musli and Nedovic that made it 16-15 at the end of the first quarter. Rivers and Lukas Lekavicius hit consecutive triples for Panathinaikos early in the second to put the hosts ahead 24-18. But Milosavljevic answered with a transition triple, added a long jumper and a pair of free throws. With James Augustine and Suarez adding baskets from close range, the visitors went in front and held 32-35 halftime lead.

Back-to-back triples from Nedovic and Suarez opened a 34-41 lead for Unicaja early in the third. That's when Calathes stepped up, fueling a 10-0 run for the hosts. Lojeski and Chris Singleton hit triples for Panathinaikos, making it 50-45, but more consecutive three-pointers, this time from Milosavljevic and Suarez, put Unicaja back in front with a slim lead. Calathes hit a step-back three to tie it 54-54 after 30 minutes, and then nailed a second-chance triple to start the fourth quarter. Suarez countered with a four-point play, but Pappas hit another second-chance threeand added a step-back jumper for Panathinaikos. A triple from Rivers opened the first double-digit lead of the night, 68-58 with 6 minutes to go. Ray McCallum had a pair of layups at the other end, but Pappas, Kenny Gabriel and Rivers each hit one more from long range, to make it 77-69 entering the final 2 minutes, helping the hosts close it out.

"It was a typical game, we were sure before the game it would be like this. It was one game in the first 20 minutes, that we did not play too bad on offense, but we did not score under the basket, we did not make open shots, we made two or three turnovers on fast break, and that’s why we had only 32 points. In the second half we found a good way to win, by defense and by offense. But Unicaja also played very well and this is why we could not break the game open until the last quarter. In the last quarter we made an extra effort in defense and offense, and that’s why in the end we have this important win."

"We were playing a pretty good game for three quarters, even when they increased their physical level in the third quarter. But for many reasons we played one terrible fourth quarter. Why? It was not only our mistakes. It is true we had 16 turnovers, and Panathinaikos had only 11, but strange fouls, unsportsmanlike fouls and technical fouls changed the rhythm of the game. And Panathinaikos used more experience and was able to play in this situation. But I always try to see where we can improve, and these turnovers were the type which were coming 3 or 4 in a row, which gave them a chance to score on the break against us. And we lost control of our defensive rebounds, allowing them to hit threes after their misses in the last seconds of their possessions. Playing we played like today, and playing like we did last week against CSKA, we can battle for everything."

We are looking to build off this. The key was defense. Putting together stops, so our offense can flow. Once we have our defense going, I think our offense is coming.”
