Kane, late 18-0 run lifts Ulm past Nancy

ratiopharm Ulm broke its two-game losing streak in Group C by downing SLUC Nancy 90-73 at home on Wednesday. Ulm improved to 3-2 while Nancy dropped to 1-4. Da'Sean Butler and DeAndre Kane led the winners with 18 points apiece. Philipp Neumann and Per Guenther each had 10 for Ulm. James Bell led Nancy with 23 points. Florent Pietrus added 13 while Benjamin Sene and Randal Falker each had 12 for the guests. Falker added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Ulm led 22-17 after 10 minutes and extended its margin to 38-31 at halftime. Sene, Pietrus and Alando Tucker led the guests' comeback and an outstanding Bell allowed Nancy to get a 46-51 margin. Ulm managed to regain the lead, 56-55, after 10 minutes, and found a go-to guy in Kane, who had 12 points in a 18-0 run which broke the game open, 74-57. Nothing changed since that moment, as Ulm kept a double-digit margin until the final buzzer.

Butler got Ulm going but a three-pointer by Sene gave Nancy its first lead, 2-3. Augustine Rubit stepped up for the hosts and a three-pointer by Taylor Braun soon made Ulm regain the lead, 7-5. Guenther joined the three-point shootout and Raymar Morgan allowed his team to get a seven-point margin, 13-6. Falker took over with a three-point play which Butler matched with a bomb from downtown. Pietrus stepped up with 5 unanswered points to bring Nancy within 16-14. David Brembly and Kane soon answered with consecutive baskets and Neumann found his first points to make Ulm get a 22-17 margin after 10 minutes. Nancy struggled to score early in the second quarter while a red hot Neumann boosted the hosts' lead to 26-17. Falker scored again and a three-pointer by Pietrus gave Nancy hope at 28-22. Bell joined the three-point shootout and followed Sene's basket with free throws to keep the guests as close as 32-29. Ulm found a go-to guy in Brown late in the first half, who got help from Guenther to make the hosts get a 38-31 margin at halftime.

Morgan scored again right after the break but Tucker struck from downtown and Florent Pietrus collected a steal which allowed Bell to keep Nancy within 40-36. Morgan kept pacing Ulm but Falker, Sene and Bell combined for all points in a 0-9 run which completed the guests' comeback, 42-45. Kane stepped up with a put-back basket and Butler allowed Ulm to regain the lead, 46-45. Bell struck from downtown, however, and Tucker copied him right after that to give the guests their biggest lead of the game, 46-51. Rubit and Kane tried to change things for the hosts and a three-pointer by Butler tied the game again, 53-53. Butler insisted from downtown and a put-back layup by Falker fixed the score at 56-55 after 30 minutes. Andy Panko found his first points to give Nancy its last lead, 56-57. Ulm started to excel on defense and back-to-back baskets by Neumann ignited a mamooth 18-0 run in which Kane had 12 points - 10 consecutive - to break the game open, 74-57, midway through the fourth quarter. Bandja Sy and Falker tried to change things for Nancy but Ulm stayed on fire, finding good shots everywhere, and by the time Salva Arco and Guenther struck from beyond the arc, all Ulm fans were celebrating an important win.

Head Coaches

LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
ratiopharm Ulm
"We showed an improved performance today, even though we still had bad stretches – like in the third quarter. But we fought back and played really smart today. We had more assists and less turnovers than in recent games, and played very patient. We didn’t try to force the issue. I’m very happy about this win, which gives us a bit of an edge in Group C."
WEISZ, ALAIN
SLUC Nancy
"A 17-point difference at the end is tough, because we came back really well in the third quarter. However, we let Ulm back into the game. DeAndre Kane was very aggressive during this stretch. He rebounded and scored and by doing so gave his team confidence. It’s really a pity that we lost this game, but we still believe that we can advance. "

Players

KANE, DEANDRE
ratiopharm Ulm
"It feels good to win again and I´m happy that the hard work finally pays off. It is my role in the team to bring energy on the court. And that`s what I did in the last quarter. It all started with our defense. That I hit some shots is just a bonus.”
BELL, JAMES
SLUC Nancy
"Both sides played well tonight. Up to the last 10 minutes, the game was very close, but in the last quarter we really struggled. This stretch really broke our back. We can’t wait to play this team again. One thing we really need to do better the next time: We have to stop the opponent’s pick-and-roll.”
